“No wrong answers except for Feanor”. That made me laugh out loud while on public transit.

The death of Beleg is one of the most stupefying moments in the entire legendarium.
Reading that section is enough to bring a tear to the eye. As beautifully written as it is tragic.

Another example of why I love this Tolkien channel most of all - the small diversion to discuss - and speculate a bit - that Beleg being fatherless contextualizes his deep connection to the young Turin - I always sort of wondered about why he loved Turin so much - perhaps he was healing his own pain and loss through a surrogate son? Lovely speculation for sure

Re: the number of maimed and disabled heroes and legends in the Legendarium. I’ve said something like this back in one of the Beren/Luthien videos, but I can’t help thinking that Tolkien’s experiences in war led him to include such details. Including, I might add, the fact that all of these heroes are still able to do mighty things once they recover. WWI was especially brutal in how many soldiers on both sides survived their wounds only to be permanently maimed; to the point that plastic surgery as we know it today was pretty much invented at this time.

I choose to see it as Tolkien’s way of saying “yes, your wounds are great; but your life is not over and there is yet still great hope and possibility for you.”

The videos that are over 60 mins have got a special feel to it. When I started this video, my girlfriend went like “Haven’t you already read the whole book (COH) that you’re watching/listening-to a whole video on one of the chapters?” 😂😂😂

Laugh is all I could manage because they wouldn’t understand. Heck, I wouldn’t understand if I didn’t discover works of Professor Tolkien early in my life AND developed an appreciation of his works.

Only Tolkien fans would understand. As always, thanks Dave ❤

Beleg is one of my favourite elves in the whole of the Legendarium. It's sad many don't know how awesome and devoted he was. I also love the line 'son of the wilderness, who wist no sire', it's so evocative! I thought it meant he was one of the original elves but you are right in that this would be odd. It's hard to describe Beleg as he is of course one of the most impressive elves but he has a devoted, earthy quality that makes him seem more Mannish. It's sad to see him get so embroiled in Morgoth's Curse but I don't think he would have had it any other way if it meant fulfilling his love and duty. I always imagine it must be hard for an elf so involved in human lives to end up in Valinor amongst the Valar and Vanyar who had never encountered the Younger Children of Eru and realise that you might never see your mortal friends again. I imagine Beleg would have many things to say to Finrod about this in later Ages.

A great retelling of the tragic story, Dave. Not all artists have realised that Gwindor lost one hand, as seen in the illustrations.

This series has been done amazingly. This channel is definitely for the experience Tolkien fan....if I ever come into a billion dollars you'll be running your own first age TV series...except I'm just a construction worker, so don't hold your breath

That revelation in the lightning left one of the most vivid impressions upon my first reading of the Silmarillion. Never a doubt in my mind that you would do justice to that unforgettable moment!

Amazing story telling as always!

I always wondered on some Tolkien friendships if they weren't a kind of love not lived as if it would be lived today.
The mistake a friend for a foe situation reminded me of how Frodo saw Sam for a brief moment upon his rescue from the orcs. Though Frodo thankfully did not slay Sam.

I always assumed that Gwindor took on Turin as part of his healing. It is not uncommon to be strong for another to cope with one's own issues.

Beleg and Finrod are definitely in the top 5...but for me Fingolfin is number 1...the sheer cajones on Fingolfin to ride up on Morgoth's front lawn, quite literally and call him out is probably the most badass moment in all of fiction, let alone in Tolkien's works.

“There are no weong answers except for Feanor.” Classic. That’s why my favorite elf is probably Maedhros. Indeed he is Feanor, one might say, Feanor as he should have been.

Yet again another cracking episode, the bit by the lake when he burst into tears is so very moving, absolutely brilliant stuff.

Always loved Beleg. Tolkien clearly valued friendship in the same way the ancients did in terms of virtue. It is a sad thing that that virtue is in tatters now until perhaps its value is relearned in a time of crisis and snaps back like a rubber band.

Thanks so much for doing The Children of Hurin series, I am enjoying it immensely and look forward to each new episode with great anticipation. The friendship of Beleg and Turin is in my opinion, one of the greatest in the Legendarium, made even more poignant due to its incredibly heartbreaking end. I was moved to tears by your superb storytelling. I just love and appreciate Tolkien Untangled so very much, by far the best Tolkien channel on YouTube. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished Rainbow Dave.

Your story telling is fantastic and brings a whole new level of engagement to these beautiful and tragic tales. The most awesome elf is obviously Gil-galad. No, wait, it’s Elrond, but only if you don’t count Galadriel. But of course her brother Finrod is the best! Except for Fingolfin. But I’ve always loved Beleg the best! I think Tolkien love Beleg especially. He’s the only elf he ever clearly drew himself. Drawing elves is very difficult. I’ve drawn Beleg, Thingol, Luthian, Glorfindal, Eleond, Galadriel, Celebrimbor, and Ciradan, and they are hard to get right.
