ET scared the shit out of me as a child. Remember the part when he’s lying on the bathroom floor, dying?

Elliot’s mom walks in and sees ET lying there. She laughs for a moment, but realizes that the goblin is not only real, but it’s infected and gray.

The goblin invader reaches to Mary, begging for death. She flees, and we hear the invader’s noxious death throes emanating from the bathroom.

I have a theory on *E.T.*

I know he was derived from the Rick Baker alien designs he did from the defunct *Night Skies (1981)* film, which itself was derived from an incident involving owl shaped and sized aliens laying siege on a farmhouse in a town in Kentucky (it might be the inspiration for *Night of the Living Dead, * and the story evolved into *Poltergeist* and *Gremlins)*

I have to wonder if *E.T* came from Steven Spielberg watching George Pal’s *War of the Worlds* as a kid (as movies were frequently replayed in drive-ins before VHS and DVD rentals) and he imagined himself in the farmhouse scene.

If you think about it, E.T. is the Martian with a head and neck attached (with a glowing heart where the glowing eye would be)… that the head with the human face was added to humanize him.

I always found ET horrifying to look at, even if I remember enjoying the movie.

It depends on the purpose of the alien. *Star Trek* only has humanoid aliens because you’re still making a show with a budget. Even so, for as silly as it might be to depict an alien as nothing more than a human with silly putty on their nose or forehead, it’s that “they’re alien _enough”_ that you get the idea.

*Star Trek* is not so much a semi-accurate prediction of the future as it is a morality play like “The Three Little Pigs”

Hell, be it “Arena” (with the Gorn), Admiral Ackbar or even the alien from the cut scenes in *The Watcher in the Woods (1981)* or the hero alien from *The Alien Factor (1978), * you’ve had shows and movies play on the idea that just because an alien looks ugly or weird doesn’t mean it’s evil.
