While they did like to cause each other pain at the end of the day they didn't really want to kill the other.

There’s a popular theory that the reason why Tom never killed Jerry is because they’re actually best friends and their rivalry is all fabricated to make sure that Tom doesn’t get replaced with another cat. They mess with each other a lot and sometimes they go a little too far with their rivalry but regardless they both depend on one another even if they won’t admit it
