This is a brilliant song. Just absolutely brilliant!
The songwriter, Jimmy Driftwood (professional name) had to have been inspired when he penned it.
– We fired our cannon 'til the barrel melted down.
– So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.

Back in the late 60s/early 70s my mom used to play a couple of Johnny Norton songs regularly. This one has stuck in my head all these years!
