The Battle of New Orleans: War of 1812

After three years of bitter fighting between the United States and Great Britain, the War of 1812 concluded with the Treaty of Ghent. Or at least, it should have done – because one final battle was about to be fought. The Battle of New Orleans.

The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

In 1814 we took a little trip,
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississipp,
We took a little bacon and and we took a little beans,
And we caught up to the British in a town called New Orleans

Funny, I searched your channel just two days ago for a summary of this battle. Not finding one, I figured you would get around to it eventually. Viola! Thank you!

What many don't know is that although the Treaty of Ghent was signed, Sir Edward Pakenham was ordered, on the QT, that if he was successful at New Orleans, he was to procede up the Mississippi river to continue the war. So, regardless of the treay, if Jackson had failed at N.O., the war would have continued, and would likely be lost.

A friend of mine overseas in Wales🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 actually said it best that, in regards to military might and overall mentality, it could be said that the U.S.🇺🇸 is the son closest to the father🇬🇧. Canada🇨🇦 is the well-behaved first born but Uncle Sam is the rebellious son more like the father in his prime (which the father hates to admit😂).

Most important battle in US history. Full stop. Some say “oh it was meaningless because of the treaty of Ghent.” Nothing could be further from the truth. The treaty had not yet been ratified, and do you really think that if Britain had won and captured New Orleans that they would just give it back? Pakenham carried orders to set up a colonial government in New Orleans, and claim the Louisiana Purchase for Britain.
