Your advice for the kid to choose their instrument assumes that the parents allow that -- my parents chose my instrument for me, and then my dad would always stand behind me while I was practicing, bossing me around, telling me to stop, go back, do this, do that, further destroying my motivation. Parents really know how to mess up their kids' musical education, don't they?

It's amazing how many different instruments people want to play and how much they describe the beauty in them. It makes me happy to see there is a instrument for everybody.

I like to think my instrument choose me....I wanted to play the flute, but was told to start with the whistle first to get my breath I can't stop playing my whistle, I love everything about it, the sound, the feel of it and how it flute sets to the side most of the time collecting dust, but I still play it, I will master it at some point, but the whistle speaks to me

Learning to play piano as a foundation instrument (for understanding music theory) is something my music teacher in high school talked about. Basically you learn to play piano for a few years on top of another instrument you prefer.
When it comes to choosing either a piano or violin, this is where the controversial Chinese-American author Amy Chua suggested in her book: "Battle Hymns of the Tiger Mother". Of all the instruments in an orchestra, Ms. Chua considered these 2 are the most difficult to learn and mastering either 1 will teach a child discipline and to work hard to achieve results. Ms. Chua argued a young child doesn't know 1 instrument from the next so it is up to the parents to make that choice (in her case only between the violin & piano).
Sujari Britt started learning to play piano but after hearing Yo-yo Ma asked her parents for a cello and eventually became a virtuoso playing the instrument. When I was younger, my parents discouraged me from choosing a guitar because of the size (carrying the instrument to and from lessons). This is a practical matter like if you have 1 child already playing 1 instrument, the other would automatically play the same because they can both share the same one. They would share the same teacher and play the same repertoire making it easier for 1 child to help the other in need.

For me it was guitar, I always used to think I should be a drummer after about a year I was alright then the snare drum head broke and my parents couldn’t afford to get a new on right away, so out of boredom I picked up the guitar that was collecting dust for years, now I can play just about anything

I started violin only three years ago, and it is a very foundational instrument. A year after starting, I decided the high and screechy sound was strange. Now I play bass guitar and stand-up bass

edit: also i can’t decide what to do next

I cant decide between cello and violin, both make me happy and its too expensive to take both at the same time.
