Greece to Buy Israeli Iron Dome Systems Amid Tensions with Turkey | Firstpost America

Greece is reportedly in talks with Israel to buy the Iron Dome Air Defence System for a cost of nearly $2.5 billion. Defence officials from Greece say that the Iron Dome has proved its capabilities after defending Israel from thousands of rockets and missiles fired by Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran since October 7, 2023. In addition, Greece is also purchasing 40 F-35 stealth fighter jets from the United States. This comes at a time when relations between Greece and Turkey remain frosty despite being NATO members. Athens and Ankara disagree with each other over Cyprus and thousands of islands in the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. With US President-elect Donald Trump now in power, Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis is trying to rekindle ties, which he claims were great during Trump’s first term.

Turkey disputes Greek sovereignty over (both historically and legally speaking Greek) islands, attempting to drop the Treaty of Lausanne, which Turkey itself approved and signed, and which determines Turkish borders. This Treaty Turkey already de facto violated by intruding to Cyprus, Iraq and Syria but this is not the ultimate goal. Control over the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean passes through Greece which holds her ground firmly backed by her own powers, by her allies and by Law.

The islands were from the ancient times historically Greek (Hellenic). The turks can cry all they want. Yes the ottomans conquered many of the islands but Greece got them back. Turkey has no legit basis to claim them as theirs. Actually all of Turkey historically isn’t theirs either. The first Turks appeared in Asia Minor around the 11th century, following the Seljuk victory at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. Before the turks left central those lands were inhabited by Greeks, Armenians, Persians and Assyrians. There was no such thing as a Turk.

Haters will say whatever they want, but Israel weapons have proven to at least, do the job. Anti-rocket systems are difficult to make efficient but Israel has done a good job protecting their civilians from makeshift rockets which are more harder to detect and shoot down by sophisticated technology. It’s easier to intercept a missile than a flying pipe which has no signature.
