Keep in mind all the video samples were captured with the Canopus ADVC 110 Firewire DV converter. Those video clips were then latter output to VHS tape and then recaptured using the three different products. This method shows the difference in image quality better. In middle 2019 I put away my old Dazzle DVC100 and bought a used ADVC-110 for 25€.

I'm reconverting all my old Video8, Hi8, VHS and VHS-C (150+ tapes) with the ADVC-110, video and audio are so good compared to the old DVC100, I really like how this DV cards converts my old tapes.

My ADVC has only the front 4 pin Firewire port working, but who cares, it converts my old tapes like a dream.

Oh, last thing, I built a custom Core Duo machine only for DV capturing.
I capture DV signal with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, Kino, a NEC firewire card and a Fujitsu SSD, no dropped frames at all. Windows XP and 7 kept dropping frames during capture with Pinnacle 9 and 15, WinDV and Scenalyzer.

ADVC-110 for the entire life 💕

I bought a 12 dollar ish PCI TV Tuner card after I sold my Canopus ADVC-110 a while ago. Ironically I love the FireWire capture. But I love the TV Tuner capture. Captures all the videotapes I want with all the imperfections, glitches and static gaps between a home video.

I love watching these videos :D Makes me remember when I had my Canopus until I fell in love with my TV Tuner. 😄🐼🎨📼

Based on info from this and other sites I acquired a Canopus ADVC 110 and a Mitsubishi HS-HD2000U VHS player. Hoping to get some good results with transfers soon!

I want to start by saying THANK YOU for putting this information out there, it is extremely helpful, you are performing a true service to the film-making community.

SPECS: 2017 Mac Book Pro w/ thunderbolt 3 ports, Sony TRV68 Handycam

DESIRE: Capture my HI-8 tapes at highest possible quality to project in a theater.

Will the Shuttle upscale my h-8 tapes to 1080i/p? If so is this route higher quality then manually upscaling captured 480p footage in Adobe premiere?

Can the Shuttle or Canopus receive s-video and component audio simultaneously during the capture? Or will I have to capture s-video first and then the audio and sync in premiere?

Do I need a external video capture card for the Canopus?

I apologize if I missed this info somewhere, I've watched what I think are all of your videos on the subject and cannot find the answers

THANK YOU!

0:38 - all three images have severe stairstepping. It seems the cheap device deinterlaces into 30p simply by doubling lines, while two other devices allow to capture in interlaced, then you deinterlaced it yourself. It would be nice if you have made the video in 60p so that the examples looked more natural.

Hi. I bought a Canopus ADVC-100 a couple of years ago after your recomendation. Its been brilliant. I have a PC with firewire card in it. My question is can the Canopus take Dv video in from my camera in the front and dv out the back connection to the PC? I know I can connect the video camera direct to the PC firewire but I wanted to have a large TV connect to monitor the video at the same time. So I wanted the TV connected to the analogue phono connection and the camera in the front dv and the PC in the back dv. Do you know if that is possible?

Mant thanks.

I am just getting started with converting some old VHS tapes, and have a Canopus 110, but in my first attempt, I didn't get the audio in the stream via firewire. Am I missing something? I used a direct USB convertor as a first attempt, but the quality was poor, I did, however, get audio with this method. Maybe I am misunderstanding something from the sketchy 110 manual, but I have analog coming in the front jacks. Analog mode selected, and using the rear firewire port to the PC with no other PC connections. Do you need to add cables for the audio channels, or does it stream via the rear firewire too?

if you have that problem with color shifting.
The thing that works for me to correct that:

1) open _Settings (Options)_ in your capturing software
2) click a button next to your _Capture device_ that says -Settings-
3) then click _Control_ button
4) go to the _Hue_ slider, and pull it all the way to the maximum

after you do all that you will no longer have color shift problem!
thumbs up if it works!

Ok... Question as I'm having this issue...

I'm still capturing on my old Dell Studio Laptop with Adobe Premiere CS6 on Windows 7...

With ALL modern laptops not coming with FireWire ports on them, what route do you suggest?

Go with a desktop and install a FireWire capture card to it? Or will the Intensity Shuttle work as a capture device in Premiere via USB 3.0 on Windows 10?

I ask because the laptop I'm using to capture with FireWire is starting to die...

Hi, I recently started researching ways to convert old VHS TV recordings to (ideally lossless) video files that might be suitable for AI/ML interpolation and upscaling. I have two capture cards available to me, but unfortunately both are USB, one is an elgato analog video capture (the popular one on amazon) and the other is a Micomsoft XCapture-1 (very reliable for game capture in my experience). The issue I have with both of these is that they lack Time-Based Correction capabilities. In this video you suggested trying to circumvent the use of a TBC using a firewire DV converter. The ADS Pyro you displayed now runs for $259USD on Amazon. Do you have any suggestions for other DV converters that would (at least partially) circumvent the need for a TBC? It really seems like nobody manufactures them anymore. The other solution I've seen has been to get a VCR with a TBC built in, and I have no idea where to start there - professional VCRs seem to sell used for a ton of money. All of the most popular and elegant solutions(including the advc110 @ $300+) seem to be out of my price range. Thanks for reading!

In terms of quality, is the ADVC110 better than capturing Hi-8 tapes using a Video8 camcorder via firewire?

Hi there

Great video

I have just purchased a Sony GV-HD700 Clamshell recorder, which I plan to use to capture vhs as well as Dv. I was just wondering if I would get a similar quality file with this device as with the Canopus 110? As they are both FireWire out

Do you know much about capturing analog signals with these clamshell recorders?

Thanks,
Nick

Thank you for this channel!! This video is how I discovered you a few weeks ago. After watching several more of your videos, I decided to take a leap from my Elgato USB Video Capture to the ADVC110 and I'm so much happier. Firewire is so much better than USB and always will be. I almost bought another Mid 2011 27" iMac because mine is starting to fail on me. However, after seeing your video where you're using the ADVC110 with an M1 iMac, I knew I would be fine using my M1-Pro MacBook Pro with an external monitor...and yes, I used your link to grab the Apple Brand Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, which now completes my collection. Keep at it, man. Your content is super helpful!

Quick question - For the Conopus ADVC or ADS Pyro, can you run the firewire into a USB-C 3.0 with an adapter directly to Windows 10 /11? If so, going to try and use VirtualDub and Handbrake to clean-up and compress as needed. If Conopus and ADVC wont work, do you recommend any other FireWire converter that would work with USB-C 3.0 (Intensity Shuttle, or other)? This is for old transfer of old VHS to digital family vids. Thanks again!

I just checked out the price of the ADVC 110 and Intensity Shuttle 😰. Suddenly I came out with another idea. I can connect my HI8 camera to my MiniDV camera, record everything from HI8>MiniDV>Mac with FireWire. It will take 2x as long but at least I can avoid buying this accessory. Last time I did it quality looked fine to me.

My guess is, you you use a 60 FPS timeline in your video editor, and deinterlace the DV AVI captures in VirtualDub using the MSU Deinterlacer, your output would rival that seen on a CRT. The output from this process is 480 60p. It retains all the detail and the smooth motion.

It sounds like you have lots of experience with various methods of video capture. Will you entertain some questions?
I have tried a variety of methods or capturing home video's (VHS) with less-than-stellar results. Nothing I have done is anywhere near the quality I see when playing the VCR directly to a TV. Here is what I have done.
1. Dazzle DV bridge to firewire port (with various capture programs; Movie-Star5, Adobe Premier, WinDV, VirtualDub, Cyberlink Director). Capturing with no compression at 25Mbs rate.
2. Diamond VC-500 USB using Cyberlink Director (tried AVI and mpeg2).
3. Panasonic DVD recorder encoding mpeg2 directly from composite video), then importing the DVD into editor.

Basic problem I cannot yet overcome is generally crappy image. I can get by pixilation with the high-rate AVI capture. But images do not have sharp edges and a fair amount of noise (like snow) within the images. Not over-driven with snow but enough to reduce overall image quality.

Any thoughts on whether or not stepping up to a Canopus ADVC 1xx might get result in a better image? I hear so much talk about this unit but cannot find direct comparisons.
I have heard of others using a composite-to-HDMI up-scaler device and then another device on that to capture the HDMI to a memory device (thumb-drive). Can you recommend this approach?

I use a PC but want to get an ADVC 110. Do you know if I get a Firewire to USB converter that I could still get it to work? It seems like every cheap capture device I get fails.
