All these comments that say it's easy to do it yourself these days are failing to take into account 2 things: 1) The tape owner might be old and not able to understand hardware/software like a young person and 2) Even the best software for these types of situations, like OBS for example, requires tweaking of settings to get it right and involves a lot of trial and error. It also depends on the hardware you're using to transfer.

All that said, it's not as "easy" as many here are painting it.

You can buy an inexpensive cable at any computer store and transfer it yourself

They sell RCA to USB conversion pieces on amazon. It's easy now a days but does take time.

If you just want to make sure you have something left in case you send it out, just record the actual TV. What your phone? It won't be best quality, but at least you'll still have a memory in motion

You can do this yourself from home. All you need is a clean, working, VHS deck and purchase a converter capture device. There are many variety out there. And a laptop or desktop computer that can handle some basic video editing and capturing software. I do this as a hobby, for myself, and for family and friends.

Haha people buy anything on Groupon.... This demand for tape dubbing is far to east to do oneself. Try using Google. Also the digital files last for decades? I would have figured it would last longer? Lmfao
