Homemade Ketchup without sugar

Today I'm going to show you how to make homemade ketchup from scratch.

This sugar-free ketchup is made with fresh tomatoes, onions and apple.

I made this ketchup with fresh tomatoes, but you can make it canned tomatoes or tomato paste (but you'll need a bit of sweetener in that case).

In a heavy bottomed pan, add the tomatoes, water, diced onions and chopped apple. Bring to a boil, cover and cook over low heat for 40 minutes.

Blend with a hand blender and push through the sieve to remove seeds and tomato skin.

Cook over low heat for another 10 minutes, or until thickens to your liking.

Let it cool and transfer to a jar or a squeeze bottle.

Enjoy!

I just made this ketchup and it turned out great! I used extra tomato paste because hubby likes his ketchup thick. A little Italian seasoning, curry powder, and a dash of nutritional yeast for taste.. it's a hit. Thank you!

I made this ketchup a minute ago. In fact it is still cooling as I am typing this. I used canned tomato (1.5 kg), 2 teeth if garlic, one medium size red onion, half tbsp spicy chili flakes, 3 tbs of white vinegar, 1 apple, and 2 tbs of mustard. The result is awesome! Thanks a lot for this easy and healthy recipe. I am also thinking of cooking longer to try to make tomato paste minus the apple. Trying doesn't hurt.

I made ketchup by accident while working in a restaurant years ago. I would save vegetable trimmings to throw in stock pots. I had a lot accumulated one time, so I decided to make a veggie stock. After simmering tomatoes, celery, onion, parsley, etc. I strained it, then, just to see what would happen, I put the remainder through a food mill, and there it was! Ketchup! and so flavorful, too...

For canned diced tomatoes add a tea spoon of backing soda and let it stay for about a half hour (make sure to mix well the baking soda). This will reduce the acidity.

My 10 year old loves to eat ketchup with everything. Although he is very healthy and we eat home cooked Indian food most of the time I was concerned because stored bought ketchup has so much preservatives and sugar. Your recipe is very simple and I particularly liked the idea of using apples for sweetness. Thank you for sharing a healthier and simpler ketchup recipe

YES YES YES! This is what I've been needing. Love the chart at the beginning comparing ketchup's sugar levels to other sugary foods. The visual of how much sugar goes into the bottle of ketchup is really an eye opener. And I did not expect apples!

Thank you again! I am diabetic and am slowly improving my diet. I don't eat much ketchup but the sugar free in the store is so expensive! I love this alternative.

I love the way you used the apples for sweetness- To the ketchup.

I'm gonna say this right now, this is one of the best (if not the best) homemade ketchup recipes I've looked at.

Adding an apple and a various mix of common spices you have around the house AND SKIPPING the sugar is really important for my taste. I've literally been looking for a sugar free recipe that isn't all too savory/acidic from just the tomatoes. And as one helpful commenter pointed out, you can always add some baking soda to reduce the acidity if there's too much ❤

I'm writing this comment before I've even made my first batch of ketchup but i am definitely trying this out 😊

Awesome, thank you!! I just adapted a bit because I was in a time rush:
fresh tomato, tomatopaste, apple, briefly cooked chopped onions, a tiny bit of fresh date for sweetness, a bit of water-> all into vitamix and it’s done-> love it!!
May try your exact version another time :)
Thanks so much again!

This recipe looks great. I've been making my own ketchup for quite some time, it's one of your earlier recipes*, right? You had it at the end of another How to Cook Smarter video. I used to buy no salt and no sugar ketchup, but it got more expensive and harder to find. So I definitely will give this a try when we finish the old batch I just made. Thank you again for sharing your talent and creativity with your many followers. You are definitely a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐YouTube chef! *For homemade ketchup: 1 cup tomato paste 1 tbsp honey 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 tsp mustard 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp black pepper 1 cup water

Thanks for the recipe!!! I've been thinking about making my own Ketchup because I find store brand too sweet. I started making my own pasta sauces about 15 years ago for the very same reason!!!

It's February so will try to make it with canned tomatoes. In September will make a double batch with ripe tomatoes from the farm. Thank you for the recipe - it sounds delicious 😋

This is smilar to my homemade Napoli sauce, which I make in bulk then freeze in portion sizes. Although I don't use a lot of tomato ketchup, I would make a larger quantity of this recipe. Then pour into the fancy glass yougurt jars that I have saved/recycled. Alternatively there are some brands of, single serving, plastic yogurt pots that could also be used/recycled. Then freeze and use the smaller quantities as required. Thanks for sharing Sasha. It looks delicious! I already know this recipe will be a hit. 👍 👌 💯 👏 👏 👏 👏

This is amazing! I've had to omit ketchup out of my life because it kept on ketching-up (corny joke) with me. Now I'm gonna call it a COMEBACK!! Thanks!!
