Is Mobility Overrated? Mobility vs Stability

Is everyone always telling you to work on your mobility and you’re not sure where to start?
Well surprise! You might not even need to be working on your mobility at all, at least not how we see it traditionally, as flexibility.

We often use the term “mobility” as a catch all term to describe moving our bodies better. A big part of that process that can often be overlooked is stability!

For a joint to work perfectly and give you exactly what you want you need ideal ratios of mobility and stability. A good marriage or these two things leads to great functional range of motion and healthy joints, but A mismatch can lead to Injury. And every joint is different!

Make sure you’re working your body the right way and giving it what it needs. It’s not always just mobilizing!

Always love your videos but as someone with terrible mobility but decent stability this is fascinating to me! Thanks for making quality stuff like this!

This is me in a nutshell. High degree of mobility but not an equal amount of stability. Physio is helping me out so much the last couple of months.

Thank you, Pat.

Shoulder stability issues but great mobility here. Since I started working on my shoulder stability (kettlebell overhead walking, bamboo presses, bodybuilding accessories for shoulders, back and triceps), I solved so many problems and my mind-muscle attivation is completely different.

However, while mobility is been endorsed more and more explicitely (via apps, programs, etc...) when we search for stability or functional mobility we should really look into functional fitness. At the end, a great deal of exercises and accessories for stability comes directly from functional fitness.

Thanks for sharing Pat. I’ve never heard these 2 areas compared. Your background definitely makes you a professional in this arena in addition to you being a top elite athlete. Wishing you the best in this upcoming Games 🏋️‍♂️

Uncle Pat,

I’m an ex-swimmer. I can OHS with my hands touching together, but really struggle in the front rack position.

Any pointers?

PS SI joint stability work please! My car accident when I was 20 (bike vs car windshield) is interfering with my CrossFit dreams 😭

You should launch a series on social media! Easier to share also.

I don't think mobility is overrated, but movement quality is underrated for sure. In my opinion and personal experience, strength is the foundation for most things athletic but if you don't have the stability, you can't access all of the strength you've got which in turn makes you less mobile by default too.
