I am so glad I see you guys living off the land as I was raised by my grandparents. So much more healthy and the flavors of the food so much better. Love your channel.

Here in Newfoundland we cut that fat back into small cubes then fry it up til it's golden brown, spoon the cubes and fat over boiled potatoes with your supper. Sounds crazy, tastes absolutely incredible. We call the cubes scrunchions and it's a traditional part of a recipe called Fish and Brewis. So good.

I'm going to be rendering fat into lard all weekend! I just watched the age pheasant video! I've never had aged pheasant, I'd like to try it now.

#askhomesteady Id love to see some of Kay's recipes and next year seeing some videos about preserving and canning.
I can't wait to watch tomorrows episode, the concept of dry aging a whole bird is very interesting. :)

We love our lard! Never rendered it with a crockpot, we always grind first but it still takes hours.

Hey Austin, something like this is perfect for your butchery. Set it in there and you won't have smells.of lard in your apartment.

This is almost exactly how I do lard myself....I do cube up the fat, not to make it easier to render, but after most/all of the lard is rendered out, I throw the leftover bits in a skillet and crisp them up. Can use them in place of bacon bits, but they rarely stay around long haha

Is there a reason you don't add water to the crockpot? I understood that water helps keep the fat from going rancid as quickly. It evaporates out as it renders, but keeps the fat at a more consistent and slightly cooler temp so it oxidizes less. #askhomesteady

When i make lard I only use the leaf fat and I grind it first. The leaf fat will make you a much better lard for baking because it has almost no taste at all plus it renders very fast. It only takes me 4-5 hours to 6 quarts in a crockpot. You can also add a small amount of baking soda to the fat maybe half a tea spoon and that will make it extra white. The best thing to strain the lard are the paper funnels they sell in the paint department, I use the medium. I will be getting around 30# of leaf fat tomorrow from my hogs I raised.

Loved watching my grandparents do this. My grandfather would swap some handmade wooden pieces, like chairs and a table, for half a side and all the back fat. So that my grandmother could render it down. And he would only take a pig that was butchered on the wax of the moon, not the wane. For more meat.

About how many jars of lard do you get from 1 pig and after rendering the lard does it need to be refrigerated immediately?

good stuff....so I take it 1 tbs of veg. oil is the same as 1 tbs of lard...when substituting for recipes that call for oil?

So you dont need to remove the skin? How long before it turns to a golden liquid? What if you remove the liquid too soon, or too late? First time trying this!
