How to Render Exterior Walls - Beginner Tips

Roger revisits a topic that Skill Builder covered many years ago, why? It is one that gets professional plasterers very hot under the collar. Who knew there was so much passion wrapped up in putting sand and cement onto a wall?

Return to render! (not to be confused with the Elvis song Return to Sender).

I've been plastering over 20 years and I've learned the best way to plaster a wall is the best way for your body. Work easy. If it looks and feels right it is right

One thing to bear in mind if you are attemptng this as a DIY'er. It's mega physical, you need the stamnina to keep pushing that render onto the blocks all day, then more still to work it and gert the finish. You can easily beforced to bail through fatigue or blisters if you're not used to this kind of work.

What did I get from this video? 1. Sieve the sand - comment from tdbsnr 2. You don't initially get the render on perfectly level, you finish it level 3. I'll never do straight scratches, 4. Always use lime, who doesn't want creamy render lol! 5. I need to buy more tools woot! 6. Patience is a tool. 7. Rendering is hardworking but worth learning. 8. I have much to learn. 9. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, greatly appreciated.

Hi Roger,
I live nearby in Surrey and the cheapest quote I could get for just front and back of a 4 bed detached was £9500. This included removing the old render but half of it was very good condition and the other half you could see the outline of breeze blocks on the 70's extension. I decided whatever I did would be an improvement so after seeing some Polish builders down the road going over some original render I thought I would give it a go. I used Tarmac ready mixed render and it cost me about £300. I put some pvu adhesive on the wall and then put 2 thin coats on just from my ladder. A year and a half later its still perfect with no cracks. I have seen better but I think it's at 95% and on a par with my next door neighbours. It's just a marvellous render but in lockdown I had to visit at least half a dozen Wickes's to get enough

This fellow knows what he's on about yeah fair enough his techniques differ from my techniques but he's so right about the sunlight and that's what caught my attention first I've seen plasterers what have been working for 25 years and soon as they natural light hits it they've got rippleffect all in their work that's why I like watching different videos because there is always something out there to make your job a bit easier and good tips

Just before I render, I bless the wall with a dry glass of red wine, and then I go at it! Good for you Roger for doing your way and it works!

I can see why the plasterers might give you a hard time but as my Mum used to say "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." The finish speaks for itself. I was taught quite a different way as the result of an exchange of trades with a bricklayer. Using spots and a table so we didn't have to bend so much with a labourer keeping the muck coming. I taught the bricklayer the right way to hang a door (I'm a retired chippy) and he showed me how to plaster and render. I love the way you guys tackle the problems as well as showing how to do the job. Good series of videos.

Your obviously a professional, , , in saying that you're OBVIOUSLY a decent guy and understand that by showing your skill in an understandable way to ' half' decent diy'rs(like myself)that you make life a little bit easier and with a lot less Fair play to

I love you Roger! You make the hard diy jobs accessible for normal folk like me. Thank you! Perhaps it's time to give up my job in the city and become a property renovator!

This video is fantastic and has helped no end. I've been trying to get a wall rendered but can't get anyone to do it in my time scale. I've decided to go at it myself and this has taught me what I need to know. Top teacher

It looks as if some of those plasters have nobbled your sand to try and make you look bad, but you continue to help us novices to get better and that will do for me. A lot of these experts don't want anyone else to be able to do things and think the less people that can do something makes them more wanted, what is sad is that it doesn't work like that and they will never get better at doing things because they think they are too cleaver to learn anything.
