Years ago, I was on a transatlantic flight. When boarding and getting settled, the woman next to me was barely holding it together; near panic mode. I tried to calm her down but she was close to tears in fear. Eventually, I went to speak to a steward to see if they could do anything for her. 'Oh, Don't worry, she flies with us often. We all know her. She's freaking out because she survived the Tenerife crash. She'll be perfectly OK once we're in the air.' So, I just held her hand until we took off. Then she was fine as though nothing had happened.

The Pan Am didn't alert the KLM, the visibility was so low that by the time they saw the approaching KLM's lights, they had little time for anything. Captain Grubbs pushed the rudder to the left and put full throttle, the heavy bird moved slowly and by the time it was hit it wasn't clear of the runway and was at 20 knots of speed.

Van Zantem flew for another 150 meters or so, crashed without his landing gear, and exploded as it was full of benzin. If only Van Zantem had started takeoff 30 seconds later or 30 to 45 seconds earlier than he did, this accident would have been a lot less disastrous.

I can't blame him for his errors, the bureaucracy in the Netherlands was harsh on pilots exceeding their hours and due to unfortunate events they were going to arrive late, having exceeded their hours. The pressure severe punishments for this can out on a pilot, especially a role model one, is insane.
