Plato's Epistemology : What Is Knowledge?
in the field of epistemology, modern thinkers and philosophers imputed to plato the remarkably modern analytic view that knowledge is justified truth, or justified true belief. however , plato associated knowledge with the apprehension of unchanging forms and their relation to one an other. knowledge is , according to him , always proportionate to the realm from which it is gained, so that if one derives an account of something experientally , then the views attained will be mere opinions. because the world of sense is always in flux , but if one derives an account of something by way of the non sensible forms , then the views he attains will be pure and unchanging , because forms are unchanging too.
in his dialogues , plato often talked about the idea that knowledge is a matter of recollection , or what he called anamnesis.
it is not the result of learning , study or observation , knowledge is not , according to plato , empirical, but it essentially comes from divine insight.
plato's epistemology , or theory of knowledge comes mainly in the theaetetus. through the character of socrates , plato considered 3 different theses. these theses are . knowledge is perception. knowledge is true judgment . knowledge is true judgment together with an account. without any definitive conclusion or solution , we are left with the impression that plato's view about what constitutes knowledge is probably a combination , or a synthesis of all these separate theses.
