If you do both of those and don’t pay well people still won’t work for you

Good pay + good work life balance is how you keep people

I'm currently working for a company (been there two years, longest ever for me) that has that integrity-based communication. They openly tell us that our families and our health matter more than our work, and they are flexible with our hours. The pay is not the best, but the people are amazing, the culture is amazing, and I'll be staying there until I'm done with college and ready to launch my career.
The ability to be excited for work every morning because I get to see some of my favorite people is way more important to me than a few extra dollars an hour. We really are a giant extended family there, and it's amazing.

I agree with Dave.. but you still need to pay them a fair compensation. Notice I didn’t say high compensation. People want to be heard, valued, and seen…plus pay them fairly.

So right. My husband is a retired maintenance man. He worked for the largest paper company in the world. He went above and beyond his call of duty. However, the men who worked on the assembly lines were not appreciated by their supervisors. So they would leave the job in a hot minute. They have had to offer good pay to keep new ones coming in. But no matter how much they get paid, if they are not appreciated and told so, they won't stay.

I agree with him on this one. I've been with a company for two years, even though I frequently get job offers for significantly more pay, because I enjoy the position and like the people I work with (bc of reasons the video mentions).

Went from working as an engineer for a shipyard to being an electrician…love working with my tools and seeing progress or completion at the end of the day…

“People don’t go to the assembly line and do mindless stuff”. This guy clearly hasn’t been in the workforce for a while because yes, they do.

This is so true. I am currently working in my field as a project purchaser after being a ops manager at a construction company and even though somewhat making the same, I can’t stand how “easy” what I’m doing is. I miss having to tackle challenges and having a big impact on company success and decisions

Disagree with the assembly line analogy, that job has more meaning than pushing useless paperwork.

Senior leader here - couldn’t agree more. Be honest and fair with your people. If they fail, it’s your own failure as well.

The biggest thing that retains people is one thing… pay them well.

After doing the mindless stuff and discovering Chinese wages, some appreciate the next opportunity to earn better wage and to do more interesting tasks, even when the more interesting task must be accomplished most every day or the company goes out of business. There is always a down side to employment and a downside to unemployment. We get to express gratitude thankfully for both kinds of opportunities. 😊

I have my job still but just started looking again after 10 years. I just feel like I'm doing the same thing every year as goals and task and it's no different than the year before.

Just got done with an internship at a company that had neither of those qualities. I’m a safety coordinator for a power line construction company, and for some reason, this company excluded the safety personnel from safety policy creation and only used the coordinators to police and enforce. Their retention rate was less than 10%.
