Typically regarded as docile, and even sensual, they’ve been talked about from Greek mythology to Hollywood! And today, we’re showing you the 7 Scariest Sightings of Mermaids Caught on Tape!

I believe in mermaids but I think they’re not as standardly “beautiful” as the tv

I honestly believe they could exist, but may be bigger and more horrifying than we thought. Picture swimming at the beach and a long fin swims under you. You instantly think shark, but is actually a 12ft long mermaid with sharp teeth reaching for you to pull you into the abyss within a blink of an eye. Damn!! Scared my own self telling that story 👀😧

For almost 10 years I worked as a CO in my state's correctional system (been out of that for almost 6 years now). I recall one particular inmate, a Haitian. Younger guy and actually pretty respectful and didn't get into too much trouble. One day we were talking and he asked me a very odd question. Asked if I believed in mermaids? Naturally, I said no. He then began to tell a couple stories about how, if you met/talked/paid off the right individuals (voodoo priests, etc.) that there were 2 particular, hidden coves you could be shown that had mermaids in them. Of course I asked him if they were like in the movies? You know, pretty/red haired and shell bras.
Well, he said no...not really. They were humanoid. Not white but more brown/olive complexion (which makes sense being an aquatic creature), they didn't have fish tails but he described more like eel-like lower halves. They didn't speak and they didn't smile/show their teeth because he said their teeth were like needles. They were all carnivorous and predatory. If you got too close to the side of the boat/leaned over they were known to swim up and snatch you. I recall him saying he'd lost an uncle this way. They did like shiny things but only the way, say, a barracuda does in that they will mistaken something shiny in the water as prey.
Naturally, I did mock him a bit and asked how much drugs he had smoked to believe such a thing? He got quite offended. Haitians, I came to find, are very proud people and he swore everything he said was true. Which then I had to think, of all things, why lie about something like mermaids?!
At the end of our little, fascinating talk I asked him why were these things in Haiti? He paused to think about it and told me, he wasn't sure about an English term for it, but the best way he could describe why they were there was because the "ground was tainted" in his words. I asked him to elaborate and he continued that when the French brought over African slaves to the island, after some time, the slaves, through their spiritual practice/magick, made an agreement to some, particular entity to rid themselves of the French slave owners. From what I could gather, it worked but in exchange the land of Haiti afterwards was cursed and the mermaids that reside there are a byproduct of such occult/metaphysical practices.
Interesting story, I guess. Just wanted to share.

I don't know about anyone else, but I really want mermaids to exist, even if they are 12 ft long and scary, I have always had been fascinated with them, I am not afraid of the ocean (unless there are sharks).

The flopping mermaid in the freshwater lake is definitely human. You can see where the feet are pushing out just above, and to the right of the fin. You can also clearly see them bending their knees, they have two separate kneecaps. It looks more like someone swimming in a mermaid tail trying not to drown.

I think mermaids being real is possible since humans haven't explored the entire ocean. It's also possible that mermaids live in communities deep, deep in the ocean with their own laws, holidays and traditions. But in my opinion, there's no way a mermaid has her hair all done up beautifully with flowers and other things and it's unlikely they have clothing, they do live in the ocean after all. I also think mermaids are probably scary looking creatures who prefer to travel by themselves and enjoy being left alone, which, I honestly can't blame them.😅

Mermaids may indeed exist, but all of these sightings could be someone with a mermaid tail pulled on.

Mermaids are real for sure I just don’t think there as “beautiful” as the tv has always said they were.

It wouldn’t surprise me if there were several humanoid species through out the centuries.

For the go pro guy, if you look hard enough at the last time it is shown before moving to the next story, then you can see what looks to be the shape of two human legs. Like someone was trying to be a mermaid but they started panicking and thrashing

I highly doubt that mermaids would be a clumsy to not notice any people recording them they have to be in like muddy water or something

As a Fisheries Observer, for almost 9 years now, one of my jobs is to identify any marine mammals by looking at their distinctive markings or any shapes that helps identifying their species. And also understood how the fins work and the fins shaped like they were. Watching this #4 I can clearly see a human’s leg rapped up in a tied chlothing.

There is definitely more to the mermaids and, broadly speaking, an aquatic humanoid race (using the term coined by George Noory) than just a myth. There are at least three documented cases one cannot dismiss: 1) The famous Scottish mermaid in the 18th c., a young female creature spotted close to the shore by multiple witnesses, villagers collecting seaweed. A teenage boy threw a rock and hit her in the spine. Her body was washed ashore a day or two later. She was buried in a Christian ceremony by a local priest and there were dozens of witnesses present. The sighting was described in detail in local records, which are available online. The grave has since been lost, unfortunately, after 300 years. 2) The sighting of a mermaid near Vancouver, British Columbia, in the late 19th c. I saw a photo of a newspaper clipping about this in a locally published book about the early Vancouver days. There were four well-respected local residents (the newspaper story lists their full names) fishing from a boat, they were accompanied by a local Indigenous man. The five men were out in the Straight of Georgia off Point Grey (where UBC is these days). The mermaid popped up right near their boat. She was an older creature, rather ugly, and had long yellow hair. The Native man was very upset by that and told the white men that it was a bad omen. He also told them that some time before that a dead mermaid had been found at the spot where the Squamish River flows into Howe Sound (present-day City of Squamish). So we may consider this as sighting No. 3.

In ancient time they have drawings that they are really around... could be cool if all to be intouch again and helping the world to survive.

#5 would be the most realistic based on how it’s swimming. I haven’t seen any human be able to swim through water in that way before.

This is satire right? Like one of them you could very clearly see knees bending while the tail was splashing above the water.
