1. Don't give your cat essential oils" they could be deadly.
2. Don't ignore ktty's teeth, hand out dental treats and water supplements, brush if possible, human toothpaste is toxic!
3. Never declaw your cat
4. Don't let your cat out at will, do not allow unrestricted outdoor access.
5. Don't use scented litter, some cause respiratory problems, clean box more frequently.
6. Keep your cat engaged and interested, they need enough stimulation like play, and climbing opportunities.
7. Make sure cat has lots of opportunity for drinking water. Pet fountains should be easily accessible, cleaned and refilled often, and preferably multiple fountains in several locations.

I used to use scented litter because the poop stunk so bad. The cats did a better job with the litter boxes when i switched to unscented litter. Then i switched the car food and THAT was the difference with the smell. Worth the extra money for better food!

I agree that getting my cat to drink more water is important. My cat didn’t drink as much as he should, so I have put water dishes in 4 places around my apartment. This has helped. I also bought a water fountain for him. That didn’t help. He completely ignored it! Oh, well. He has continued using the still water dishes which I refresh frequently. He’s 16 and is quite healthy - I take that to mean I’m doing most things right for him!

I used to let my cats outside. That stopped 20 years ago! 2 got hit by cars and a few went missing for days. I don't want to go through that anymore!

We have 5 cats, all blood related, all spade and neutered and never go outside. They play, chase each other around the house and sleep really close to each other. They love sitting in the windows and absolutely are so happy.

I live in a quiet suburban area at the end of a cul de sac backing onto another, with gardens all round and a pond in the back garden. We have always had cats since moving here in 1980, and they had free access to outside during the day. Our last two cats both lived to 18 and the current incumbent will soon be 14. He likes hunting and eating rats and the vet says that's why he has such good teeth! Declawing is illegal in Europe. Of course, our cats have annual examinations and vaccinations and lots of grooming and cuddles.

60 years ago we never cut our pets nails, never bathed them unless they got into something, we fed them table scraps, I know my mother didn't know onions would kill dogs and cats, only vaccine was rabies, never went to vet unless hurt or sick, they lived to 18 years old. What happened? Bad food and harmful vaccines?

My daughter and I have four rescue kitties and they are our little family🥰We used crushed walnut shell litter, never go outside and water is in flat dishes. My Tortie eats ND food for kidney health, from Italy, she’s going to be 13 next year. Her behavior changed after we lost my daughters first cat, she is very subdued and touchy, but her appetite has been very good. My daughters cat is a ginger female who my Tortie doesn’t like, but keeping my bedroom door shut gives her security. Two calico sisters who have very different personalities, very smart and hilarious at times. I’ve had 8 surgeries and my Tortie has helped me through each one. I sing their names to them so they will like the sound and never say their names if they misbehave. We live in a 960 sf mobile home, hoping to move to larger apartment soon. They have made our lives so much more enjoyable and better able to cope with depression, anxiety and non-epileptic seizures. They go elsewhere if I’m having one.

I'm 55 and have always been a dog only kind of person. To be fair, my grandmother was terrified of cats and for that reason, cats were never an option. 4 months ago I watched and fed (broken up pizza) a kitten that was living behind a business I frequent. After two weeks he finally allowed me to pick him up. From that moment, we became best buds. I've gone through cuts, scratches, bites and he even urinated on my head one night while sleeping but hey, he's still my buddy.

The soft claw covers work well, and really solved the furniture issue.

I have one indoor cat and three feral rescues on my porch. I love them all and I am trying to get them inside the house. It’s been a long journey and thankfully the humane society helped me with getting them fixed. ❤

We have 8 cats, 7 are in/out stray rescues (range from 2-8 yrs old) & the 8 in an 18yr old strictly indoor plus we also take care of an additional 25 or so strays... luckily, we live at the end of a dead end road with a park next door so the kitties have plenty of running room. Our 7 rescues play with the the strays & know when it's time to come in for the night. We've been very lucky with the strays... they come & never wanna leave so they all 'know each other' & not really aggressive to one another.... we are the literal definition of 'the crazy cat family at the end of the block' 😂😂

Plants! Yes! I'm a gardener who always researches plants for toxicity to animals. I don't even plant toxic plants outside too close to where people walk their dogs. All of my lillies and other toxic plants are up close to the house behind a little garden gate. And I try to overwinter plants out in the greenhouse. I can't bring them inside because we do have one cat who will eat anything I bring in. So important to know what you have and what to leave outside if you have cats or dogs. People also need to be careful what they plant around horses. There are a lot of toxic plants that can down a horse if they munch on them. Kids too! A Crinum Lilly can kill a child if they decide to see what the leaves taste like. Even the pollen of that plant is extremely toxic! I do have one, but it's safely away from pets and people. I call it my "Murder Lily" because it's so toxic. I'm very careful when I look after it. I always wash my hands after being in the garden so I don't pet my kitties with any pollen or sap on my hands.

I agree. In cities and suburbs, cats should not be let out. They have a high chance of getting hit by a car or killed by a wild animal.

I love my cat so much
I do everything I can to make him comfortable and for him to be happy.
He sleeps with me every night and Not just under my arms he sleeps on my bed in places that he can stretch out his little body

After my husband died he was a gift to me. He was only 5 weeks old and is so beautiful to look at .
He does such sweet things.
I know my cat, must think my behaviour of crying for my husband all the time is
just normal human behaviour . I have cried so much these, last 5 years.
but at the same time he seems to know I need him and he comes to me and head buts me all the time and licks me everyday.
I love my kitten to pieces and will do a thing to make sure he stays healthy.
I change his water everyday and I have two litter boxes .
I keep one on the main floor and one upstairs
I clean his litter boxes out everyday.
I feed him real salmon that I boil and then put in a blender so that he can eat it and not choke.
I also have bowls of dry food that I refill everyday so that He never runs out of food.
Someday I cry a, huge amount and I never ever want him to go hungry. .
I love him as if he were a little child. I will go on doing things for him to make him happy
I swear he understands what I am saying to him
We are so close.

I had another cat that died in 1994 And I also loved her so much
We treated her like a, little queen.
We had her for 23 years and then she died from hypothyroidism.
She was a happy little cat and so loveable.
I CRIED for many years after she died.

In the Netherlands where I’m from declawing cats has been against the law since I can remember. I know my brother in the USA had his cats declawed and even though I pointed out the cruelty of this practice he valued his antiek furniture too much.
On the other hand I don’t agree with not letting cats go outside. They love the outdoors and quite honestly they are less frustrated if they can go out. You’ll just have to accept the risk. Right now I just spotted a cat walking across my shed. It looked so in place outside. My own cat used to walk with us when walking the dog!
All my cats have always been allowed to roam outside but I made sure they always had their shots and took them in to the vet for regular health checks every year.

PS My partner is a Vet and told me that scented litter actually burns their pads when moisture activates it !

I never let my cat out of the house. I live on a busy highway. A neighbor saw a raccoon grab another neighbors cat and drag it under a car. Must’ve been rabid 🤷‍♀️
I love my cat and want him to be around for as long as possible.❤❤
