How To: Tell The Difference Between Left and Right Drilled & Slotted Rotors | PowerStop

NOTE: This video is specific to PowerStop Drilled & Slotted Rotors.

For drilled and slotted rotors, it is important to pay attention to which is the left or right rotor. If your rotors are not labeled, luckily there is an easy way to tell. On the top side of the rotor, follow up along the slot. If it is correct, it will point toward the back of the vehicle.

21 seconds. Love it .. straight to the point and no waffling. Keep being awesome.

Well the direction of the rotor is more based on the fins inside

Thanks this video is very helpful for people who open boxes to quickly instead of reading labels and instructions.

I think it depends on the fin under the rotor if it's straight fin it doesn't really matter

My powerstops are like this, but the TRQ rotors my brorher got for his truck say the opposite.

My PowerStop rotors must have been mislabeled because according to all 4 boxes, the slots are in opposite directions to your video. Part numbers ending in R should be right, passenger side, L should be driver's side. Boxes were all sealed, taped up when they were delivered.

Is this specific to these rotors? Is this due to cooling veins? Others state the opposite of these recommendations.

Cooling fins do dictate direction but whats more important is the outer hole grabbing gas 1st then pushing it centrifugally outwards and the next inner hole doing the same. If the pattern started to vent at the center, gases would stack up internally.

I just noticed my friend put his rotors on backwards. He said the instructions didn't mention the fact that they were directional. You guys gotta make sure these instructions are included in the PDF instructions for all of the kits you sell via Summit. Not everyone instinctively knows they are directional, and not everyone will check youtube to see if they're directional. Some people read the instructions and if they don't specifically mention these cross-drilled and slotted rotors are directional there is a 50/50 chance they're going to put them on backwards.

my power stop warriors lasted 115 k Km, with avg 300 km of driving daily, that is impressive!

and if they are reversed? even MORE STOPPING POWER OR WHAT

As per David Antanaitis and Anthony Rifici from GM in their paper on the effects of rotor crossdrilling and performance they determined that "cooling air is ingested towards the center of the rotor and pumped "outward" towards the outer edge of the rotor." This would require some testing in fluid dynamics but logic would suggest as the wheel/tire on the front right side of the vehicle for example (as shown in the video); turns clockwise as the vehicle accelerates, the slots should be oriented in such a way to assist the above function. We want efficient heat dissipation and efficient airflow across the face of the rotor. The way the video currently depicts the slotted rotors indicates that they are oriented to assist cooling from outside air and DO NOT take advantage of the behavior observed at the center of the rotor. I would like to know if the cooling properties of outside air the vehicle is cutting through is better vs taking advantage of higher velocity air being ingested towards the center of the rotor.

So why do some brands eg Mini JCW show the same disc for the same side...only powerstop shows the flip of the slots

Funny thing is a1auto says the exact opposite for there rotors

I assume this is the same for rear as well?
Mine came MISS labeled if that is the case.

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

the slots/drilled holes DO NOT determine if the rotors are directional. rotors are ONLY directional if the internal veins are angled, if they are straight, you can put the rotors on any direction you choose.
