Another ex-Brit here, became a Swedish citizen a week ago! Thanks for the tips, Karlskrona is definitely on my radar now.

I would recommend Visingsö, the Island in lake Vättern wich is our second largest lake. It's very beautiful and packed with historical sights, for example Näs, a medieval castle ruin, Visingsborg, a newer castle ruin, ancient burial mounds, 2 beautiful churches and more. There is also a nice beach, several cafes and restaurants and for birdwatchers Erstadkärret is a must. Taking a ride with with the "remmalag" (horse-drawn wagons) or go on a bicycle ride on Visingsö is kind of a classic. You can also bring your car on the ferry from Gränna wich is also a popular tourist destination.

I live in Karlskrona, glad to see we made it to your top 5! I also recommend Kalmar and Öland where I grew up and don't forget the city voted Sweden's best summertown, Västervik.

It's so nice to see that you tell about the little places and not only Gothenburg and Malmö! You made me really wanna visit Kullaberg!

Hit Gothenburg, and follow the West Coast up to Strömstad. Final stop Koster Islands.
It will blow your mind.

As a middle aged woman who’s Swedish and American I can only chime in on these terrific destonations. All of these places are no further apart than 2 hours drive as well!
So definately a complete summer time road trip that will bring you to some of the heartlands of the country. I’d add the ancient university town of Lund outside Malmö on this trip, lots of history, beautful canpus based town and buildings to see, great eats and cafés at good prices too.
I hope you do a trip around the west coast from the epic summer town of Varberg and Göteborgs Skärgård up through Bohuslän near Norway. All my childhood years in the States, nothing was more uniquely Sweden to me than those islands on the Atlantic, with gusty summer winds fragrant with ocean salt, heather, boat tar and the pine trees twisted by the winds by the sea.
Best time for a visit is late summer, when the lobster season starts!
Fresh atlantic mackerel and seafood galore, and you can pick your own blue mussels among the rocks to fry up with garlicbutter, fish your own lovely crab, and pick chantrelles (kantareller) in the woods in August. Also if you’re into seaweeds and kelp there are a zillion different kinds to find in certain areas that are really tasty and healthy.
From lovely Strömstad you can take ferries out to the islands, the best ones being where there’s still a real fishing community all year round, (Rossö is my fave), others more like resoets from the last turn of the century, or you can drive out to some places like just outside Tjärnö the isle of Saltö where most of the island (save a few private cottages) is a nature reserve with the oldest woodland in Bohuslän, (tufts of moss that grows to your knees!) magificent cliff hikes around the Island, great places for skinnydipping without a soul in sight, and the ”devils path” a natural 1, 5 yard wide deposit of pitch black magnetic diabase stone running across the island.
Rare birds, seals and flora are found there too for the enthusiast. Not a single business anywhere but there is parking and the neighboring island on the other side of the small bridge (Tjärnö) is large and all only about 15 min drive from Strömstad!
There’s a marinbiology research and teaching center right by the bridge on Tjärnö also worth visiting.
You must get up there, preferably in August and hopefully in good weather, bring a good waterproof wind breaker and a sweater just in case. Magnificent.
Love this video, you nailed some of my absolute fave spots like Stenshuvud, and Simrishamn.
❤️

Kristianstad is an old garrison town, it was founded by king Christian IV of Denmark (hence the name, and why the town has the monogram C4 as their symbol) to be a defensive stronghold against the Swedes in the early 17th century. That didn't work out so well, but this is why the town is so well planned out with broad streets and nice rectangular housing blocks. Definitely worth a visit.

As someone who hails from Österlen, I approve of your choices. I grew up just outside of Simrishamn and went to school in the town for six years. I spend a lot of time on Österlen in the summers.

Hehe, grew up in Höganäs.
Biked more or less every day to Kullaberg.
Lived in the small village called Ingelsträde just 5 minutes drive from Höganäs.

If I saw this before I would of recommended you to look up the small villages around Höganäs. (Mjöhult, Ingelsträde, viken, Hjälmshult, Jonstorp and so on) they aint much. But very beutiful landscapes in those small places. All of the small villages have something to enjoy, especially during summer.

An other great way to spend the day would to bike through these small villages.
Absolutely fantastic places.

Born in Kristianstad, lived in Simrishamn until I was 12, then lived mostly in Karlskrona (with brief periods for studying in Hofors and later Gävle). I can say that my favorite town to visit and possibly live is Simrishamn, but that's mainly because of nostalgia and the excellent summertime restaurants. Also, Österlen has an ancient half-joking rivalry with Ystad and Simrishamn - everyone east of Ystad says Ystad isn't really part of Österlen, everyone in Ystad says it is. 😁
Also, Simrishamn has Autoseum - Northern Europe's largest car museum. It's well worth a visit, and has a couple small mini-museums attached to it, including one featuring the best collection of self-playing instruments in the world. The Smithsonian has asked to buy several of their pieces, and always get "Nope" in reply.

I really like that you recommend Skåne and Blekinge for a roadtrip. Although I live in Norrland, I grew up in Skåne, and think it's a wonderful place for travelling. But a word of warning: Karlskrona is indeed beautyful, and indeed deserve a visit, but do remember that many of the islands outside Karlskrona might be forbidden area to non swede residents, due to the role as military protection area. One of the most important navy bases are located to Karlskrona.

Great video!

I’m a Swede and a Stockholm citizen. During my very first years in life, me and my parents travelled down to Skåne each summer for vacation, for a number of years (this was back in the 90’s).

I think you’ve made a very good choice of five recommended areas to visit. What I can tell you, is that I probably would have had great difficulties picking out a smaller number of locations to visit. To me, entire Skåne is filled with gems that are worth visits. Many locations in Österlen, Skanör and Falsterbo in the southwest, Ales stenar etc.

Since my previous summer holidays in Skåne, Skåne has always had a special place in my heart. In the summer of 2019, I was fortunate to be able to go back there. To my joy, Skåne hadn’t changed much over the years. It was just as beautiful as I remembered it!

Just left Kristianstad where my daughter lives to go home to Älmhult.

Did my military service there and the thing is, I love it still...

You've nailed it! You showed us wonderful views of some of Sweden's best parts. I've lived in Skåne for a long time earlier but unfortunately visited Kristianstad only once but still remember it as a gorgeous and stunningly beautiful town. On your way up the country you will of course find lots of exiting places and remarkable Swedish spots (Mind you, I watch the BBC series "Escape to the country" and I always admire every inch of your countryside and small villages/parishes)
