Umpires have it hard! And from what Ive read, Umps who make it to the majors have to endure an absolutely terrible experience in the minors where they are paid almost nothing, have to pay for their own equipment, travel, and lodging, and take a lot of abuse on top of it.

I umpired little league for years, and even when you're working with 10-12 year olds you take a lot of abuse....entirely from parents and coaches, but still. I played baseball my entire life, I was a pitcher all the way into high school, and because I hated bad strike zones, I made a pledge that when I umped, I'd have the best strike zone possible. On several occasions, multiple coaches literally told me "you have the best strike zone in this league", and yet those very same coaches would have no problem harassing you about a single strike, even if it was the only, in their opinion, "mistake" of the game and was without consequence to the rest of the game.

In the league I umped, they only had money and staff enough to have a single umpire for a game, so not only did you have to call balls and strikes behind the plate, you had to run out on the field to make a call with a runner sliding into second for example. Its hard to drop your mask, run out to second and make a call while you're still running and didn't totally get in position, etc, but parents and coaches would have no problem ceaselessly arguing with you about the call...and bring it up 4 inning later just in case you forgot about their lack of approval. If I remember correctly, I think there was only a handful of games in over 5 years where I DIDN'T have to at least give a coach or a parent a warning that I'd throw them out.

The ABSOLUTE WORST umping experience ever is adult softball...these guys all think they're Mike Trout or Tatis, of that they're Sandy Alcantra if they're on the mound, and that every play and call has the World Series and the fate of the free world riding on it, and that every call should go their way...there was also no shortage of veiled threats of physical violence...all for a softball game with a bunch of amateur men....I should really call them "boys" since they acted like children

I love that we put umpires on a higher pedestal than the freaking players... When the players themselves are a bunch of primadonna's.. but but know this the majority of the people that talk crap about the empires and what looks bad on them. They probably wouldn't take half the crap that these umpires have to take from the players..

Yeah, umpires are supposed to just take it and continually be disrespected and never say or do anything about it….

Umpire was well within his right to tell him to shut the f** k up. The catcher should have been thrown out

Respect to the ump for not tossing anybody, umps now and days are so sensitive they throw you out just because. Great move by the veteran ump. IMO

For what it's worth. The pitch was a strike.

It wasn’t that bad of a look. He wanted Lester not continue airing his frustrations at him. Didn’t let emotions take over deciding not to eject anyone. It was actually fair compared to some umps

and I bet if he would have bumped into Lester he would have thrown him out the game and the ump on to the next game talk about leveling up that

Home plate umps are no longer relevant and should be phased out.
