Had a pitch 2 weeks ago about 10’ high. Looked at the batter and said “Man that was close. Almost called it. Wouldn’t let another one like that go by. Just saying, inches”. Batter and catcher both cracked up. The game is supposed to be fun. Yes. Parents and coaches ruin that fun often. But we can have fun on the field.

As an umpire, I got a lot of compliments for letting people know where it missed, even though it’s not technically proper, and I would only do that for the younger kids… If you’re in bantam you can figure out where you missed lol

I ump and i do let them know where it misses after calling ball. Sometimes i go that was inside/ outside etc. Lol. A lot of us are out there for the love of the game but parents forget that as soon as we have a close call. Parents are usually the worst part of the job
