I so wanted to the Mac mini M2 Pro base model to work. It still an awesome machine but I had a hard time editing in fine cut pro. Maybe it's an isolated case.

Man, I have the same exact set up (14’ MacBook Pro M1 Pro chip model) and was debating making the switch. Thank you for the review

Final Cut hasn't had an Update in 3 months and it usually takes up to 3 months from the time a NEW chip like the M2 Pro/Max ships and Apple's pro apps are optimized for those New chips. I have an M1 Max 16 inch an when it came out Final Cut took nearly 3 months to see an update that took full advantage of the chip. So I understand people want perfection instantly when it comes to Apple machines but as I understand it talking to the Devs on the Logic Pro team, the pro app teams for apps like Final Cut, Motion, Compressor, and Logic only get about 2 weeks with the hardware before it is released to the public. Unlike when Apple used Intel CPUs which they could get a longer pre-release time with, it just doesn't work that way with their in house M series chips. The M series chips take years to design but once they go into production at TSMC they go from fabrication to in the wild in the course of a very short time less than 6 week which isn't enough time for pro app hardware optimizations that have been properly de-bugged.

The equaled up-spec of M2 Pro Mini at the base M1 Pro Studio would be faster with the same price. Given if you can miss those front slots and 10Gig ethernet. 10Gig option for Mini costs $100.

Base M2 Pro comes with way less RAM and very very slow storage.

If you can wait, wait for M2 Pro Studio, I think they won't raise the price. If can't, go with up-spec M2 Pro Mini. You will enjoy 6 GHz Wifi too especially if you in crowded resident like apartment.

Thank you very Much Bombo- that’s my suspicion -Since NAND’s have been cut in half in M2’s. They would make you spend more on SSD and Ram; while the Mac studio already comes with 32 ; and even a 512 SSD, the Mac studio won’t have that problem due to Higher NAND’s and if slower at least it won’t get bottlenecks while multitasking on 4K videos plus some tabs and blog or music on

I don't think there is anything wrong with the MAC Mini Pro M2 as far as the processor is concerned, I think the issue is down to the amount of SSD you have in your system. If you bought the base system I suspect the SSD and possibly RAM might be the bottleneck particularly with large video files. I would not consider buying one of these units with just 512GB SSD. I would go for 1TB or even 2 and 32GB RAM, not 16.

how could this happen? i mean the text effect stuff requires literally no processing power. what was the footage you were editing? is it 4k x265 or 8k?

The same issue happens to me on my 2017 MacBook pro. 16 GB Ram, dedicated 560 graphics card. I was considering this device as an upgrade but these are the issues I wish to eliminate. It's sad this isn't a proper solution. Was hoping not invest another 2K in Apple products, and frankly if it weren't for FCP and a couple of other programs, I'd give Apple the chop all together.

With the same project does this issue happen with your MacBook Pro?

I have seen other reviews saying 3 streams of 4K video and some effects were not an issue. I suspect something with your particular set up.
The studio will serve you well!

I would think this is a software optimisation issue. Not that it helps because you would never know when that was going to be fixed

Yes, but. You didn't have the M2 version of Final Cut. And did you might have other apps open And were you using Apple Pro Res? These things matter.

Thank you for posting a video with your experience with the M2. I have been debating on getting the Mac Mini M2 pro with 32gb with 1tb ssd or the Mac Studio Max with just a 1tb ssd upgrade. This video has leaned me toward the Mac Studio. It was built for video creation and editing. Did you upgrade anything on the Mac Studio?

you didn't have enough ram. 16gb is not enough for real time rendering

I’ve seen a video where a mac mini M2 turned so loud under a stress, it was unbearable
