By 1977, I was listening to TenQ (KTNQ) in LA. To me they were the greatest radio at that time. But I was a radio freak. SO of course I was listening to other radio stations. Of course I was airchecking the other DJs. But it was TenQ that was givung the legendary 93 KHJ a run for their money. KHJ still had Machine Gun Kelly...before he went to TenQ. KHJ still had Charlie Tuna....until he left for TenQ. But they still had Pat Garrett! They vrought in Rick Dees! And then there was Bobby "What-a Guy" Ocean!
Although TenQ beat KHJ in the ratings, it was KHJ that ironically outlasted TenQ when KTNQ went Spanish in 1979.
Bobby Ocean was at KHJ pretty much right up until the end, when they flipped formats to country in 1981. Bobby Ocean and others would follow KHJ program director Chuck Martin (leaving Rick Dees behind) to K.West 106. I'll post my recording of those last days of KHJ, and the K.West 106's format flip from rock to Top 40.
Here's Bobby Ocean "in the middle of the day", sounding fantastic as always on 93 KHJ in what sounds like towards the end of 1977.
