Studio One - Device Block Size and When to use What?

Presonus Studio One has a lot of options for the Device Block Size. Which should you use? Why is there input latency? How come my computer is struggling to playback all my software synths?

This video explains what the Device Block Size is, where to find it, and when to pick the right size for your needs.

What about when exporting? Should we set it to highest as well for the final mix export?

you are the best Tim. you explain everything so clearly. actually better than studio one does in many instances. Do you do training courses or something like that? id love to join.

Hi.
1.Do you adjust blocksize per track?
2. before you start recording or after?
3. What blksze do you recommend for a. Vocals b. Midi drums c. Real guitars and bass, d. Midi keyboard. E. Real acoustic guitar via mic

Thanks

Hey Tim… when I click on the processing block it says 2048 but when I go to Audio block size it says 512 hmmm ? Should the Processing block be lower as well Tim??? On Studio One 6.6 MacBook Pro 2015 Monterey 12.7.5

you are at the point and quick. perfect combination. a question: I have 4 guitar tracks, I choose all 4 and add bus channel. I use a reverb plugin (for example) and it works. But I don't see the "send" option on each guitar channel. when I choose the "send" option, then the reverb effect is louder..why is that happening?

does changing the block size alter the final quality of the recording, or just what you're hearing at the moment?

Hay Tim, Now with studio one 6 the latency doesn't reduce if you reduce the buffer size. it stays the same for 2048 and 32 samples. but the thing is if i go do dropout protection, making that setting to low will reduce the "Block size " which is different from buffer size. this daw is getting confusing and buggy every day.

Hello, I made my first recordings which are 03 in total, at first everything played fine, I used several tracks with several plugins but now when playing back the sound keeps blocking, could you tell me how to solve this?

Thank you for a quick explanation of this!!

If you are tracking using an 8 channel interface (or more), but return lag is unimportant because it's live and the band is not monitoring their recording, which way do you go? Do you need the processing power of a higher value to give the interface more gusto, or still a smaller number for tracking?

Hi Tim, I am very beginner in studio one! Thanks for your informative videos. I’ve recently started your video series from number one. When I record a vocal and virtual instruments together or in a row track by track what is the best option to arrange device block size? I am a little confused 😐 thanks again!

So if I recorded vocals at a block size of 32, I wouldn't have much headroom for mixing them, would I have to switch the block size back to let's say 512 before adding those mixes?

Threads & wifi buffering of blocks of bit length to clock & measure size/time in data streams in networking & processing may oftenly use blocks sometimes. OR Encryption..?

There’s no drop down menu on my device block size settings. I can’t change it. Stuck at 485 samples.

Does block size effect stability / crashing?

so if its a measurement of time, what does each number represent? milliseconds?

Hello, thanks for your video. I am abit confused can you help me?

I have ryzen threadripper 3970x which as 32 cores/64 threads. and I have rode AI one audio interface.

I am noob at this block size thing. I was thinking bigger sample size like 1024 - 2048 is better.
But I've heard in another tutorial, "if you have a powerful PC, you can go for lower sample rates"

I am confused
and when I tried to use 64 samples. I dont recognize any pop sound etc. seems sound good.

If I go for 1024, it's ok too with the UNCHECKED "enable low latency monitoring for instruments" and
maximum dropout protection (2048 sample and 64 bit double precision)

But if I enable low latency monitoring for instrumens, it starts to get weird sounds after 512, even starts some bad sounds from 256.
and also getting slower to playback.

so shortly these 2 sounds same to me. what should I pick? which is right and better in terms of quality? (when mixing.)

1- 64 or 128 samples
or
2-higher sample rates (like 256-512-1024) with settings below

-UNCHECKED "enable low latency monitoring for instruments"
maximum dropout protection (2048 sample and 64 bit double precision)

thanks a lot
