I gotta question. 🖐 I put a few coats of spar urethane on pine railing outdoors. It peels every year. I have to redo it. Im thinking now originally i sanded with too fine a grit. Is this a possibility, ya think? I had it so smooth but im thinking now it needed more rough to hold onto.🤔

I’m just looking for a finish that is the clearest and most natural looking. Most finishes that can actually protect teak furniture. Come out very dark or orange. I have tried many different. Found some that aren’t too bad. But I have never tried tung oil .. how does it look on outdoor teak furniture? And does it protect well?

Thanks! Very useful, can you tell me what can I use for white - ash exterior? To not have too much yellow tint...

What top coat would you recommend using for an outdoor food stand? I thought polyurethane would be a good option but I’m unsure of how that would look on a light wood stain.

What would be the best stuff to use over exterior sign lettering? We have an exterior latex we want to give a high gloss finish that will last. Or we could avoid the latex basecoat?

Hi, I have a boat with white oak and mahogany rub rails. I am taking off the old varnish via heat gun and scraper. I have varnished many times in the past with Pettit Captains Varnish and though beautiful, the flaking in the future drives me nuts. I have used a product called Semco on teak which is a nice sealer but am wondering what else is out there. I know I definitely want to go the sealer route and just re-coat 1-3x a year to keep the wood looking good. The boat is on saltwater. Can you recommend a sealer for marine use? Also the mahogany and white oak have gone grey, can I use oxalic acid to restore to original color without damaging the surrounding paint? Thanks!

Is there any super hard, high clarity outdoor finishes that rain or moisture doesn't cause cloudiness..? Far as polyurethane i mean

Marc,
I’ve found your commentary on out door finishes most informative. I’m considering making a full set of out door furniture dining table large for 12 people, 4 patio chairs, 4 side tables, and one 3 person sofa. The wood I’m seriously leaning towards using is Sapele. What finish would you recommend using. There will be some sunlight involved as will as indirect rain. Your thoughts please.
Thank you for your guidance.

I have some reclaimed, finished oak boards that I’d like to put to use in an outdoor project. Can I put an exterior finish over the top of the interior finish?

Hi Marc, Thanks so much for sharing your expertise with us! I'm completely clueless on this stuff. Got a question you may be able to help me with, please. I'm hand painting an Adirondack chair for a local municipality. They instructed me to use oil-based Rustoleum paints and to add a finishing coat of spar varnish. Well, I'm finished painting and am ready to varnish. But I've read online that oil-based spar varnish will yellow over time! :( Is it ok for me to brush on WATER-based spar varnish over all my oil-based paints? I hear the water-based version does not yellow. Any advice you have is appreciated as I'm utterly confused at this point! Just don't wanna ruin my hard work... Thank you, Chris

Is there a GF product that’s suitable for decks?

What about horizontal surfaces, such as a 20 degree bulkhead.

I don't know what makes General Finishes product any better than any big box store product that's half the price, since no info is available on it. Small tiny can is $30 at my local woodcraft. From what I can see it is just as petroleum based as anything else. They used to have a customer phone number and have great customer service, but I couldn't even find a place to email on their site. It would have been nice to have info on toxicity and some Greener products on this video. The reason to go to Woodcraft vs Home Depot is better service, better products, but I don't have any faith that this GF product is better - what is the evidence?

Wood sealer? Sealing a wooden slab for outdoor use. 🤔Epoxy project . Seal coat for epoxy application is what I'm looking for.
