Go to community college, get an AS degree in comp sci, then go to a technical school and finish up with a BS in CS in just 2 semesters. A competitive, valuable degree in 3 years or less, all at a cost of <$10k.

Gov interference did a huge part, but supply and demand principles did far more. Telling EVERY kid in the US that they "need" a college degree fed into that supply and demand. The truth was most people never needed a college degree, they just needed an entry job

I fell into that trap 20 years ago! Everyone was told “Go to college! It doesn’t matter what you major in as long as you have a degree!” 🤪 Complete BS. I’m still paying off my loans for a BA in theatre arts 🙄 At 18 I didn’t know what I wanted to do and just went to the school all my church camp friends went to which was a super expensive Christian private college. If I could do it all over again I’d take advantage of my state’s post secondary program and take college courses in high school and get my AA and then go to trade school for carpentry. Maybe take a year or two off in between to work.

You are absolutely right! I went to college and got 4 degrees and my Masters. I paid all my loans back. I was told by the college that they had a placement program but after graduation the college never lifted a finger to help me get a good job. My Masters is in Social Work so thankfully there are always jobs, those jobs just pay alot less.
The biggest thing about college that really angered me was making me taking meaningless classes that had nothing to do with my degree and didn't help me at all. So they could charge more and more money. Going to college is a rip off.

Also, they choose to go to more expensive schools that don't actually provide a better product.

This is what happens when your government only cares about wants and not needs. You trained your population to revere college as a ticket into the middle class bc cost of living out grew wages. Then you got rid of home ec/carpeting/other technical courses bc they were too expensive. This is no one’s fault but the government- BOTH parties.

Why would the incentive to have quality programs go down as more students enroll?

Did schools used to think that the only way they’ll get students to go to their school, is if they had a quality program? WRONG!!

After Obama injected more government into the loan process. Universities began massive building programs to improve the student life experience. Larger dorms, weight rooms, gyms etc.
The seem to have overlooked improving the curriculum.
One representative told me it was because every university offers pretty much the same degrees, so the student accommodations became more important.
And now I'm paying for it.

I knew college was a scam back in the 90’s when I realized every kid I went to school with was going and taking out loans to pay for it and had zero ambition or idea of what they wanted to do with their life. They all just wanted the “college experience” aka getting drunk and sleeping around. They were cruel to me because I told them I didn’t want to go to college. They laughed at me and told me I would be a homeless bum when I told them college is a waste of money for most people. I started a business and thrived while they worked low end jobs that a teen gets hired for and struggled to pay back loans pay bills, and get ahead in life, and in our 40’s they are still in debt and struggling. I’m happy to see this being discussed out in the open these days, but it’s not enough as all of my daughter’s friends are being pushed to go to college by their parents. Too many people still don’t see through it. She’s 13 and I’ve been teaching her to have an entrepreneurial mindset her entire life.

They told us in High School to go to college, practically forcing us to.

They said you can go to community college then go to the big name college if you want it cheaper, use the UPS program to get it paid.

They didnt tell you that a Bachelor's degree would only pay you $18/hr, or how if you go into a IT field, you can pay only a few hundred dollars, get an IT certification, get a job faster and easier, then go to that $18/hr starting out in less time and money than going to college.

I feel cheated since i believed the school system and what society told me to do. It wasnt until i got an IT job that a supervisor there told me the best route. 5 years after i graduated high school, wasted money on some college and been struggling to find a career path without wasting lots of money.

Been working on cars since I was a teenager. I did one semester at a tiny community college, my math professor knew I worked on cars, and asked if I could put the alternator on his car. Made 50$ in 15 minutes. Was its own lesson and I never looked back

It’s not just government intervention, it’s also that colleges have changed their economic model to become money-making enterprises - at the expense of both students and the government.

One professor said the past our product was the students we graduated, our customers were employers and other people who used their services. As the students meant more and more cash our students became the only customer we cared about, which shifted the power dynamics from the teachers to the students. Now we care as much or more about how they grade us in evaluations, so angering them comes with risk.

I'm a veterinarian who took on $355, 000 in student loan debt. But I was just offered a job starting at $200, 000/yr., so I'm totally fine with taking on such a huge debt. But I also went to school for a career that required college.
