BB King and Billy Gibbons said it best. Use lighter gauge strings and let your amp pick up the slack.

its more about personnel preference, hearing a difference can be hard but the feel is very noticeable

I personally will choose the anti-tendonitis, anti-carpel tunnel 8 or 9 guage and turn up the bass on my amp!

Amazing playing.
Seems like the “9’s” have more life and clarity to them. The highs are definitely noticeable. Use what YOU are comfortable with; like BB King, and Billy Gibbons😉.

Man the jam Little Thing!!! Such an awesome groove! Great playing.

Lighter gauge always sounds better in a mix because you don't want all that low end on a guitar when you have other instruments going on

If you wouldn’t have told me this was a comparison video I would have never known.

The 13s sounded a bit fuller, more mids and a bit more pronounced lows. The 9s sounded slightly brighter, almost glass like, but still full and rounded. Both sounded great as far as overall tone, nice licks too. Are those the stock pickups in that squier? If so, they sound killer. Squier's are really the best bang for the buck guitars in my opinion. Especially the classic vibe line.

I've been using 8s the last year for standard, 9s for half step down, etc. They sound fantastic. You can get much more expressive and have more control once you spend a lot of time playing them and get used to it.

Gibson scale I feel like reduces the effort by about 1/2 a gauge - I use the Gilmour GHS sets - 10s on the tele and 10.5s on the Epi and the feel is similar

I used to play with 13s for a few years, they really do help with developing finger strength 😂

I would say for E standard with steel strings, use either light top/heavy bottom strings or 10s or 11s and then for lower tunings than Eb standard you usually want heavier for better intonation and feel. As for Flatwound strings, even heavy guages can be easy to play in E standard.

I love .13s because I really dig the tone of the wound G string--as well as the rest of the strings for its warmer tone--also i like the feel of .13s. I tune down one half a step with .13s to make bending life easier on my Strat style guitars. Note : I have Warmoth 24 3/4" conversion necks on my thtee single coil guitars, also making bending easier. But as far as scales go, truthfully i can bend just as easily on 25 1/2" scale guitars because as long as the guitar is set up properly---especially the truss rod its not a problem. Great video

Hilarious that people still argue this, with all the information out there now, about how there’s no difference in 9’s to 13’s, as far as adding low end, mids, highs, etc.
Great playing.
I’d love to see how many say they hear these differences, of the video didn’t say when what strings were used when. When I listened to it without seeing anything, it sounds like one unedited track.

Heavy gauge gives a light roll off in the high end and are harder to play. It's nothing that can't be compensated with a tweak of your amp. I'll stick with light gauge. I'm a convert from starting with 13s and I play 8s now. Love the playability and tighter low end.

BIG difference. And more pain with 13.

One of the best bassist ever to play that song with him live. Where did you find that backing track btw???

I love the 13's. Way more mid range balls. High notes on solo's are solid and not thin
