For those asking how to “freely phrase”: while simple counting helps, what helps more is to hear the melody and changes in your head as you’re playing. This can be practiced while not even playing, by simply listening to the music. You should have all the ‘usual’ forms (12 bar blues, AABA standards, etc) completely burned into your very being. They should be automatic; regardless of who’s doing what, there’s no excuse for ever getting lost when playing them. And drummers should be reading charts. You should know the chord changes and melodies, be able to see them on a page and relate to them. Once you get to that point, fluidly trading 4s or 8s or whatever is no longer a mystery.
