Thanks Von, nice video. I know you also play big band, so perhaps you could do a course on that: chart reading and interpretation, long / short note articulation around the drum set, band figure set up, fills, intro, shout, outro chops etc. Best wishes.

It's great stuff, but the explanation I think is a little tired. I've been playing jazz exclusively for a long time, and I've come to the conclusion that good fills or comping has nothing to do with a "conversation." It has nothing to do with dynamics. It has nothing to do with "telling a story." It has nothing to do with "call and response." It's more like language. It has to do with "things that sound good." Just like a pentatonic scale. There's not really an explanation for why it sounds good. Why does your ear like notes on a scale? It just sounds good. If Jazz teachers would just say: "... here's something that I've done that sounds good... use that..." The world would get a lot easier.
