The Bible Wasn't Written to You

The Bible wasn't written to you; at least not with you in mind as the original audience. That said, the Bible is definitely FOR you, and it makes way more sense when we read it with that in mind.

A huge welcome and thanks to this month's new patrons:
Kelli Farrar, Mary Choroszy, Spike Walker, Rob, Josh Garner, Cat, The Rolling Initiative, Daniel Delzell, Sam Mayer, Khoa, Johnny Shipton, JunkyFunkyFunFun (whose name I love), and Michael Raveling.

Do you seriously mean to tell me that Jeremiah's letter to the exiles in Babylon has nothing to do with my high school graduation?

The bible wasn't written to us but it was written for us... which is basically what you said. Great vid matt!

Paul obviously wrote Corinthians about me. I'm a hot, steamy, mess.

I’m not Christian or very religious but I find your interpretation of the Bible very refreshing and healthy. Thanks for doing what you do

I just came to this realization a few months ago. It just seem to clear to me; especially when you read the Bible in context and understand the culture of that time.

2 Tim. 3:16
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" but not directly a letter to you. Thanks again Matt for the video. 👍

I take 3 things in the bible personally. 1. Love God (Jesus) with all my heart. (just as He loved me enough to give His life) 2. Love my neighbor as myself. (just as He loved me enough to experience separation from the Father for a moment in eternity). 3. tell others why I believe and act on the first two. (part of acting out my faith).
I see the rest as examples of people who believed and lived in that way or didn't. I have seen mentally handicapped individuals understand the simplicity and scholars reject it so it's not deep, it just rubs men the wrong way to give up their imaginings of being in control.
I do not mean this as an argument as I am drawn to use your youtube platform as a place to witness my faith.

So thankful for this video, it's needed for so many. I have said many times, the Bible was written directly to a certain people and indirectly for us. We are not the original audience, blessings bro you have just got a sub, keep up the good work!

I always looked for the ways the Bible applied to me. Recently, I was taught to look at scripture through God’s perspective. This certainly expanded my understanding of God’s word. I highly suggest trying it!

LOVED this! I'm relatively new here, and new to reading the bible, (started at the beginning) so this makes a lot of sense to me who is only in 1 Samuel at present. Really enjoy the analogies you use to explain big concepts and interesting ideas. Keep up the great work 💡

I can't relate to what you are saying because I can always find a takeaway message for myself in the Bible as if God knew what will happen in my life. I may not be building arks or leading an exodus but I definitely can apply these feats to personal situations. For example, I appreciate the obedience it took for Noah to build something unheard of and his faith paid off, which helps me to understand the importance of obedience to God when my own mind can't conceive of something happening. And when Moses was chosen to lead the Israelites, he was scared and insecure but God never gave up on Moses...And this has helped me to understand in spite of how I feel about myself, God will help me realize how He sees me.

I’m disappointed in this opinion from you of the word. Though we are not the first audience of many of the Bible’s writings, the way you word its ‘secondary’ intent is a bit dangerous to a Believer. God uses The entire Bible the speak supernaturally to us and CAN at times speak to us by the revelation of the Holy Spirit, directly and personally. I can’t dare parallel the Bible’s intended audience to a worldly song from an 80’s bopper.

All that is written down in scripture is for our example. In that way, *it was written directly to us.*
1 Corinthians 10:11
"Now these things happened to them as an example, *and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come."*

1Corinthians 10:12
"Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall."

I find this argument really helpful when trying to understand (and apply) the teachings of the Bible in light of current social developements and post-modern culturalization. facebook-shared!
