Why I bought a Trident Ultra 4.3 to fish offshore in Hawaii

We've been fishing further away from the shore of Oahu, and my Scupper Pro felt tippy and overloaded with gear. I wanted a kayak that could handle wind and cross current if those conditions came up, would be efficient enough to propel (paddle or pedal) with the least amount of parts to break down, and have a center hatch large enough to store gear and fish. A transducer cavity under the hull, large enough for my Garmin EchoMap 44CV closed the deal.

Go Bananas in Kapahulu customized the bow and stern handles, rod holder, center hatch, seat and rudder, and my fishing buddy Frank fabricated a stainless steel mount for the transducer to fit high and tight in the transducer scupper hole.

In the 3 trips so far, I've felt much safer and have caught larger fish than I have with the Scupper Pro.

In the video, I do a brief intro as to why I chose the Trident Ultra 4.3, and John of Go Bananas walks through the improvements he made.

Hi from Matata on the Eastcoast of the North Island, New Zealand, really enjoyed the review, the additions to the kayak look great, I also have one about 4 or 5 years old now and am looking at buying a second one of this type/ultra era for my daughter, we launch straight off the beach here, short steep shore breaks and surf so having the ability to flip the lid/sounder inside the well is the preferred option for launching and returning back to the

have you noticed any water getting inside the kayak since you cut the center compartment out? Im thinking about doing the same. I still have the bungee straps so im pretty sure the lid will stay tight.

Nice rig! Someone here in Hilo has the same kayak for sale in new condition. How does it handle wind and swells? I'm ready to replace my old Jackson Cuda and might pick this one up!
