If you use the actual in-game clues trident is actually used in ocean travel. Underwater ruins, broken ships and ocean temples. These are all connected with drowneds. The only thing that drops tridents are drowned who are actively holding tridents. Tridents are visually made out of prismarine(and tips can be even quartz). The only other things drowned carry is fishing rods and by far the fastest way to clear out huge chunks of fish is with tridents.

Tridents are multitools used by oceanic people who would travel on ocean and in it.
