I am not French, however I agree with you on all points. I have worn classic, understated clothing since I was a very young girl. I wanted a suit when I was 13. I buy nice quality clothes and wear them for years.

Well thought out and presented. It use to be most clothing manufacturers focused on basics then added a few trends. Now it’s quite the opposite. Finding nice basics is like finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. I am a serial outfit repeater! I really appreciate a quiet style.

I loved your video. When I was 20 I was blessed with a trip to Paris. I was told that a French woman might only buy one really great wardrobe piece a year instead of a multitude of trendy sale items. For example, investing in a fine tailored suit. Here I am now at 60, cleaning out my closet and trying to now cultivate the classic wardrobe. I wish I had adopted this practice 40 years ago! 🇺🇸🇫🇷

My lovely grandmother always told me that if one article of your outfit is of unquestionable quality, the impression you'll give is that everything else is of the same quality too. It could be a good watch, a necklace, a bracelet, shoes, a handbag, or a piece of clothing. As for what others think: I dress to please myself, and I do end up wearing the same classic pieces over and over again. As a single parent, when my kids were growing up, I had a pretty limited clothing budget. And I have received many compliments for an outfit that was purchased at a thrift or consignment store!

Such a marvellous video I sent it to my 32 yr old daughter who has passed it on to her friends. Great advice like, don't think of your frock as an "old favourite" - call it your signature dress. Don't let the outfit outshine you etc. We need this sort of style guidance because we have been beguiled by shops like Primark into thinking "new is better" rather than "good clothes are called classic for a reason." Thank you too for making it chic to be ecologically responsible.

I don’t want to look amazing again! 😂 I have clothes that I wear for many years because they are good quality, well tailored for my body type, and because I feel amazing wearing them. Confidence is always chic. I update my basic pieces with a few colorful or trendier items. I have a jacket almost identical to yours, I’ve had it for almost 10 years, I got it in a discount sale so I paid a fraction of the cost. Merci Marie-Anne!

Marie-Anne, I find that I absolutely love your navy pinstripe blazer and trouser suit set. I believe that navy looks very good on me too, and that a set like that would be extremely versatile. It is currently on my "Wardrobe Wish List." ;-) That lace top and pinstripe trouser combo- Wow, so beautiful!

Excellent Marie-Anne. I agree with all your points. I do however, wear more color in the summer. I ask myself before I purchase an item if I think I could wear it for 10 years....it helps when I am out shopping. Classic pieces wear very well. I wear mostly basic classic pieces and then use accessories to give each outfit that special touch. You have absolutely wonderful fashion sense. Thank you

I loved all these tips especially the first one!! I feel better about choosing classic pieces in recent shopping. I feel more confident that I am saving money long term as well from excessive shopping for silly trends. One trend I wish would go away is the holes in jeans!! When I was a kid in the 80s and a teen in the 90s it was cool because we earned those holes from skateboarding wipeouts!! 😂 now it's silly to buy them with a hole.
