Quiet - Matilda Musical Animatic

Here is my last storyboard sequence for the year! I wanted to do a musical piece for my portfolio and chose this song from Matilda.

For context this scene takes place right before Matilda unlocks her telekinesis for the first time. The movie, musical and books are all slightly different about this scene.

Although I didn’t quite understand it as a child, Matilda is a love letter to the nerdy gifted children who have to face incompetent adults. No wonder Roald Dahl has been my favorite author for so long. I often had insomnia as a kid (PTSD symptom, but again, I didn’t know yet) and I used to stay up past midnight reading his books so I could maintain hope for the future by reading his characters’ happy endings and wouldn’t have to think about the real-life Trunchbull I’d have to face the next morning. The days were *loud* and often painful, but the nights were _quiet_ and peaceful. Now, I want to be an author myself so I can provide the same comfort to the next generation. I’ve been working on my manuscript since 2019.

I have autism and I feel the same way like Matilda is. After when my parents yells at me for not doing the things that they’ve told me to do and when my parents yells at my brother for cussing, not turning in his homework in on time, raging, my inside my head like music, my favorite tv shows and movies, stories (Goldilocks and the three bears, little red riding hood, three little pigs, and other stories I made up for my imaginations). My mom is SUPER LOUD when me and my brother doesn’t do the things that she told us to do. My dad is not that loud as my mom, but I LOVE my mom and dad, it’s just I don’t like when they yells or shouts at me and my brother and my cousin. And great storyboard and animatic. I love this song more than naughty, even though it’s one of my favorite Matilda the musical songs, but I love the Quiet song more.

I love how much this Trunchbull design looks like Pam Ferris, she KILLED as Ms. Trunchbull. Her energy, her delivery, and she looked like she was pulled straight out the Roald Dahl illustrations. Easily my favorite version of the character

I have (ASD) and when I was little there was always Trunchbull like people who made me feel small with the world shouting at me, but then I found this movie and I saw how this little girl on the screen that acted like me and as I admired her Bravery In spite that she was small still stood in face of the likes of Ms.Trunchbull who seemed so big and unstoppable then won and was finally accepted from those who cared about her. I then found her story than gave me the chance to find my own courage and face my own Trunchbull's and never again did I feel small. And then I found your animatic and discovered this musical... And It was like I was small again but instead it was back to that point where I found my courage. And even now as I’m writing this I'm living through that moment in my life when I was so Small but Finally standing my ground to those yelling giants of the past and now giving me the courage to face new giants that I'm facing now in the present!
And it’s thanks to me finding your animatic.
So thank you again for giving me the opportunity to find my courage again.

This is an awesome aninatic! Your art style looks really good! The way you choose to portray everything looks amazing! I love how heavily you show books/paper in Matilda's quiet place because those are the things that bring her happiness. You are seriously underated!

I love the character design in this, the combination of the Musical’s uniforms and the casual outfits from the movie (specifically keeping Matilda’s red ribbon was a beautiful touch). I sort of relate to this song because I love quiet and books, if it gets too loud I tend to retreat. Beautiful animatic!

This is amazingly close to the idea I had, except that the people around Matilda would all briefly turn into Quentin Blake's illustrations, which I wish were referenced more in the musical and movie - also that the entire scene would turn into a book Matilda was reading, it just makes sense her out-of-body moment would involve books.

Superb! Fantastic! Commendable! I almost expected the animation of Matilda leaving reality to be like in the film (I'll keep it *quiet* to avoid spoilers), but that was a very unique interpretation of her inner mind. I especially love the image of Matilda scowling at the Trunchbull, it reminds me of a time when I gave my own horrible teacher a look and she snapped at me and I cowered, but Matilda's glare makes me wish I looked at her like that.
