Neanderthals lived hundreds of thousands of years ago, one of the many ancestors to modern humans. The species went extinct about 40,000 years ago, although it continues to live on in the DNA of humans beings around the world.

Neanderthals have long been thought of as base, unintelligent creatures who dragged their knuckles and wielded clubs. Reddit says otherwise, providing a lot of information to combat this negative view. The subreddit Today I Learned has offers some eye-opening facts about Neanderthals, many of which may surprise you.

Michael Crichton’s ‘Eaters of the Dead’ (adapted into the Antonio Banderas movie ‘The 13th Warrior’) is about a group of 10th century Vikings and the Arab ambassador Ibn Fadlan doing battle against a surviving Neanderthal clan who would attack the Vikings at night wearing bear skins and then cannibalize their victims.

The Vikings called them the “wendol”, and, in the story, were the inspiration for the monster Grendel in Beowulf.

an author named jean auel wrote a book series called Earth's Children based on ancient humans and neanderthals and their lives and interactions with each other's kind. it's easily one of my favorite series not only because it's a good story but because you can really tell Jean did her research and you can actually learn a huged amount by reading them.

Given that Neanderthal DNA is in humans, there had to have been some ability to socially interact between the two species...

One note: You forgot the theory about their use of magic mushrooms.

I knew they were misconstrued to be dumb brutes, but I didn't expect the hunting bit at the end. That's really cool, and just goes to show that community breeds innovation

Suggestion: Prehistoric mating/marriage rituals and customs. Did cavemen really drag cavewomen by their hair?

I've been subscribed for over 3 years and watch most of what's presented. This my favorite episode so far. Multiple views a must. Excellent work. I really appreciate you sharing this information with everyone. Most people are still believing all the disinformation that's been propagated since Neanderthal's discovery. You actually came up with info I wasn't aware of and clarified many of the points I am aware of. Too good 👍

I already knew most of this. One thing not mentioned is that flowers were placed on some of their graves indicating that the dumb brute idea is false.
