In many ways, my recent trip to Utah was what I consider to be my best video work to date. However, there were many clips that were just too shaky to use and I was disappointed in not being able to show more of the canyon. So I started researching stabilization options. As YouTube is a just-for-fun thing for me, the price of gimbals in the past has kept me from seriously looking at them. However, as with most technology, prices have been trending downward as the tech becomes more mature.
Recently DJI announced the release of the Ronin-S, their first single handed gimbal. With that announcement, other companies almost immediately dropped prices on their gimbals. Gotta love competition!! So I scooped up a Zhiyun Crane V2 (different than the Zhiyun Crane 2...Zhiyun product naming is suboptimal) at what I consider to be a good price.
A gimbal is not necessarily a cure-all for shaky video. While it beautifully handles rotational movement, it still won't do anything for translation movements (up/down and shifting left/right). So you still have to be careful in how you use it. Also very important is making sure the gimbal is properly balanced. This helps give you the most stable footage and prevents the gimbal motors from an excessive workload.
Balancing a gimbal is not necessarily that hard, but when you first attach your camera and see it flopping all over the place, it may seem like a daunting task! However, if you follow the same repeatable steps each time, you'll be perfectly balanced in about a minute or two and ready to go. In this video I'll show you how. Thanks for watching!!
