African Grey Step Up

It is super important that parrots are taught to step-up voluntarily. However, this is especially important for African Greys! African Greys are much more likely to bite out of fear or when trying to resist. Making an African Grey get on your hand that doesn't want to be there can result in a very strong bite.

Use treats and positive reinforcement to teach your parrot or African Grey to step up voluntarily. Learn the basics of training, how to teach step up, and how to develop a terrific hands on relationship with your bird from The Parrot Wizard's Guide to Well-Behaved Parrots:

Holy crap, I used to watch your Howcast videos back in like 2013 when I had my senegal parrot kiwi! Your videos helped me a lot! I got her to do spin, shake, wings, and all the cool stuff! I got into dog training as a profession because of it. Glad to see your still posting and doing what you love :)

Hey Mike. Great to see you continue to work with and help these amazing animals. You helped me through a very tough time when my grey passed. I can attest to the bite!

I've rescued several birds from a hoarding situation all having fear of hands
I've had macaw, cockatoo, conures, cockatiels and African Grey's bite me.
My most painful bites have come from an African Grey and green cheek.

greys have sharp ridges at the corner of the top beak, thats where most of the damage comes from. Greys bite hard lol

Do you have any recommendations for a lovebird who were having difficulty transitioning from stepping up on a stick to stepping up on a finger or hand? He really dislikes fingers, after a few weeks we can now pet him but any put in front of him will just get bit. I think he might have some trauma from being grabbed or something, because he only reacts that way with fingers, not arms or anything else.

How do you manage the same side approach when the bird is facing you, and your hand? Meaning, what if I can't approach from the bird's side because of the bird's position in the cage? I'm watching a very bitey conure (she's my son's) for a couple of months, and I'd love to be able to reach into her cage to feed and give treats, or to take her out of the cage, without being bitten! 😄
