It is not the oppressors responsibility to teach us to read, why would they? It is the responsibility of parents to teach their children how to read, comprehend, phonological awareness, vocabulary development etc. the school system is just another plantation to keep black children obedient, conformed, and in a destitute mindset. Growing up my parents had my siblings & I do Hooked on Phonics afterschool & on weekends we went to the library, I was also in a writing program & my father advocated for me to be in advance placement classes, my home was & is filled with books. Some of us have big t.v.’s & no books at home. Black ppl must take back their powers & invest in their children!

Blacks have good BRAINS and good MINDS! We just need to use them. We spend too much time being focused on foolishness. I personally feel that we have superior physical bodies including superior physical brains. We've been systematically psyched into doubting our own intelligence. Low self esteem and lack of confidence has played a major role in our lackadaisical approach to education and self help.

My husband and I made our kids read multiple books during the summer and complete a math workbook. They had to write a book report on each book they read and we discussed it after. Let's just say you can tell the difference because while other kids struggled, our kids were always ahead in learning when school started back up.

Unfortunately there is a large number of individuals in our community; who were not taught the fundamentals of reading!
Most can read words; yet they unfortunately are not able to comprehend what they are reading!
Once you can ascertain, discern, and decipher what you are reading; you will be able to comprehend and have a overall overstanding of the information!

Thank you for this interview. I'm an educator in the public school system in Florida. I love the words used to describe how reading makes one feel. I will pass these words on to my students to inspire them to read. It is an art.
Our school has outdoor hallways with courtyards. Each day during my lunchtime, i sit in the courtyard and read. As the students transition to class, they see me each day reading a book. I want to be an example for my students. It also allows me to escape in my mind for a little while. I return from lunch ready to take on the second half of the day.❤

No one is keeping anyone from teaching their own children to read. Any people who don’t take education seriously will pay the price. It’s disgraceful not to teach your own children and depend on someone else to do it.
