Meta Just Had its iPhone Moment.

Many say that Meta just had its iPhone moment at its recent conference. Some say it's solely due to Orion, Meta's new AR glasses prototype, but I say its because of multiple factors. 1. A cheap mixed reality capable VR headset launching this month, 2. Meta is the first company to open camera access to developers to actually develop compelling mixed reality (and future augmented reality) apps 3. The most compelling AR device the world has ever seen; Orion.

Tech giants have been racing towards consumer AR devices for the past two decades now.. but I don't think anyone has come this close to putting together an entire package that includes developers, hardware, software.. and research together in a way that actually makes sense- until now.

It's been MONTHS since the last newsday. I promised that I would not be "ending" Tuesday Newsday, but I instead, would ONLY make news videos when there was news worth covering.

Regarding this event + meta's "iPhone moment".. I don't think its talked about enough just how much everything is converging especially with this connect. 1. Launching the only cheap mass market mixed reality device on the planet 2. Opening up actual Mixed reality to developers with camera API 3. Announcing the most advanced AR device ever made.

The Vive Focus Vision was absolutely geared for enterprise use and not necessarily for the right reasons. I sat in their announcement for press and corporations and was thoroughly disappointed to hear what they told us. They actively ignored questions about the lack of improved lenses, hardware, or screens and heavily pushed that any question in that realm was: their biggest enterprise customers provided all the feedback that they used for developing the Vision. I spoke to a rep afterwards and was told that it would be "too costly" for their enterpise customers to upgrade all their hardware to a new headset had everything been improved. Instead, it was done to encourage a "more organic transition" from what they currently have. When he told me that they would be slowly phasing out any older Focus headsets over time based on available components, I knew what was happening.

Basically, this was a bunch of BS about how Vive is unwilling to advance to the next generation of headsets until they have nickled and dimed every corporate entity while slowly going through their current inventory that's backlogged, under-sold, and desperately needs to be moved. Oh yeah, and I guess they have some very lucrative conteacts with government entities, so they don't want to rock those boats either.

It's a huge shame, since I'd easily drop a bit more for all the improvements the headset deserved.

No audio jack is an absolute deal breaker if they don’t have non-latent Bluetooth. Terrible decision by Meta.
And it’s not just about audio quality. I use headphones for audio privacy and so I don’t noise contaminate the area where other members of my family are doing their own thing.

While i did really appreciate the videos you've put more time into, i'd like to also give a shoutout to your weekly videos. Never once had i thought of them as "low-quality" and they brought me lots of joy as a long-time Fan of VR who often feels that things don't move forward. Your speculations, coverage of news and positive outlook in general were what kindled my fondness for VR and compelled me to pick up my headset more often.

Silicon Carbide lenses? wow. Very cool, and I suppose not surprising that it's _something_ high cost considering I heard that they got wacky waveguide tech. I've just never heard of SiC being used for lenses though. It's a quite versatile compound— gemstones, brakepads, sanding, ballistic armor, surge protection, diodes/transistors, and now lenses, something I've never heard of until now.

Fresnel lenses honestly kill this product for me completely. That alone makes the price difference not matter to me.

This doesn't really excuse the absence of a headphone jack but just wanted to note that you should still be able to use them with a USB-C to AUX adapter.
