A better question would be "Does Trump rattle Europe?" Multi-cultural Americans under 55 don't remember World War II, most under 35 don't remember 9/11. Some historians suggest the Korean and Vietnam wars were distractions for the US, shifting attention away from the USSR in Europe. Just as Europe cashed in your Cold War peace dividend, so did the US, giving up the capacity to fight two major regional conflicts, let alone three. With an existential threat to peace from the east, what will France and Western Europe sacrifice (social programs?) for security, without the US? You may not like to hear it, but treaty aside, honestly, you really are on your own this time. And that would rattle me.

Some uncomfortable facts neither US party wants to acknowledge. Following the Cold War the US prepared to fight 2.5 Major Regional Conflicts (MRC) simultaneously. That strategy changed in the 2000s. Today, the US Army is the smallest in decades, due in part to downsizing and recruiting shortfalls. The US Navy can't build ships fast enough to keep pace with retirements. The USAF can't afford the full suite of modernization while maintaining legacy platforms. The US retired the capacity to quickly manufacture weapons after the Cold War. There are now two MRCs, with another brewing in Asia. Neither Trump nor Harris can change the current vector, not without substantially shifting resources away from non-defense programs, or increasing taxes (triggering capital flight out of the US) or massive borrowing (triggering another round of inflation). The current geopolitical chess board was set years ago. It doesn't change via the US without a level of personal sacrifice Americans haven't demonstrated a willingness to endure for 75 years, and certainly not without unity. Hate Trump or Hate Harris, it really doesn't matter. It's not about politics. It's about reality. Like it or not, Europe is effectively on its own, regardless of who wins this November. And yes, Europeans are the ones who should be rattled by this reality.
