The chemist poisoned by dimethyl mercury wasn't dumb. She took all the precautions required by lab safety protocols based on information available at the time. It was a tragic accident. I was a lab chemist and field engineer at the time and have had to work with organic mercury, cyanide, chlorine gas and other extremely toxic substances without proper training. This incident scared the heck out of me. I no longer work in that field.

The guy who suffocated with his nose blocked by tampons to stop his snoring - surely he could just have opened his mouth to breathe? I mean whenever you have a cold your nose blocks and you breathe through your mouth?

A lava lamp takes about 2 hours to get going so I'd imagine he was trying to quicken the process. It's one of the drawbacks of the lava lamp, and I had thought of doing it, but I was afraid it might get damaged. I never thought it might damage me.

The lava lamp is no mystery at all. In fact, stupidly, I fixed my son's lava lamp by doing the same thing (years ago before I knew it was dangerous). Luckily I had better luck. When the coil in the bottom gets moved, the lava is unable to heat up and the lamp stops working. I heated it up in a double pan of water just long enough to melt the wax and get the coil to go back to the bottom. It fixed it but some of the water inside evaporated.

I saw that robotic arm video, to say he was struck in the head is putting what really happened to the worker extremely lightly. It was like he got stuffed the way he went down it was brutal.
