The game begins with the moves 1. e4 c5, which is the starting position of the Sicilian Defense. However, after 2. Nc3 and 3. Bb5, White has chosen to play a Closed Sicilian system. In a Closed Sicilian, White plays d3 and Nf3, instead of d4, in order to control the center with pawns and knights. The Closed Sicilian often leads to a slower, more positional game, as opposed to the Open Sicilian, where White plays d4 and the game becomes more tactical and open.
