Actually, the Dodo went extinct because of the Dutch bringing animals to the island, such as dogs and rats. They went extinct because the rats stole their eggs, so they couldn’t populate. The Dutch also thought the island wasn’t valuable, but then realized there was a type of tree that was very valuable, so they cut down all the trees so the dodos couldn’t hide from the predators and then were killed. The last dodo was killed in 1663.

you gotta admire the Kauai ‘ō’ō, the last specimen of the species sung its last song, hoping to find a mate to join the what was supposed to be a duet, the female would join in and sing with the male, eventually mating for the rest of their life.
The last known Kauai ‘ō’ō was a male, it paused in certain moments of it’s last song, hoping to hear a female answer it, but the male didnt know it was the last remaining member of his species.
The last recording was in the 19th century, in the late 80’s.

Saddest part about the Great Auk’s extinction is that the last pair was clubbed to death by hunters, who stepped on their eggs looking for a good spot to club them.

Found out about this bird today. Man, apparently 5 years without seeing anyone of his kind... It's heartbreaking.

The great auk is also where we get the name penguin from. Their taxonomic genus is pinguinus, so when Europeans discovered penguins in the south they named them after the great auk because of their resemblance.

Fun fact: archaeopteryx was the first bird discovered after going extinct millions of years ago as well as the microraptor. And another fact that the o'o Kauai bird went extinct back in 1987 I think so
