Masala basically means like a flavour powder made from ground up spices. Garam masala is made from dried and ground cinnamon, cardamom, star anise. Chaat masala is made from things like dried mango power.

Masala is a spice mixture or paste used for basically all types of Indian dishes .. so masala often uses cardamom, cinnamon, coriander, cumin and also includes other ingredients garlic, ginger, onion.. a mixture of spices roasted and grown down to a fine powder is garam masala ..I hope it helps you to understand
