Dr. Douglas J. Lisle, Ph.D.

Dr. Doug Lisle is an evolutionary psychologist and co-author of The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness. He and his colleagues (Jennifer Howk and Richard Seidel) have developed a revolutionary method for approaching life challenges and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. They describe their approach as Esteem Dynamics — an approach with clinical insights derived from evolutionary psychology.

Central figures having major influence on the development of Esteem Dynamics include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Robert Trivers, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered world-leading theorists in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world’s greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort, and weds Dr. Lisle’s 30-years of clinical experience to the deep insights into human nature only recently available via evolutionary psychology.

Dr. Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, and was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University. His research and clinical interests include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety and depression, the genetics of individual differences, and optimizing achievement motivation. In addition to his work with Esteem Dynamics, Dr. Lisle lectures widely on health and wellness.

Dr Lisle is available at selected days and times for a one-to-one, personal phone consultation:

Just catching up on videos. I absolutely love to listen to Dr. Lyle. He hits so many points that are right on. I have tried Starch Solution off and on several times. This time I can see this into the future, as this time my husband joined me! What a difference this makes! We finally got the foods we don't need out of the house, so there is none of the trigger foods in the pantry for me to eat. It took several years to get him on board with me, but so happy he's finally joining me. He can see the difference in himself and me, so that is a big plus.

I've been binge watching Chef AJ and others, making plans to start cleaning up my diet tomorrow (really! ). I had my last pieces from my last Chocolate bar last night and was actually starting the last few days with vfb and keeping it pretty clean other than the chocolate. Feeling better already. Quit the caffeine a week ago, and still a little tired in the afternoon.
I come home a little while ago with my $200 worth of vegetables, fruits, beans, and rice, some of which went into my new little freezer I bought this week in preparation. My Sweetie left me a card and a 18 piece Ferraro Rocher, which I eat about 2 3- packs a year since I'm vegan for the vast majority of my eating for the past 7 years. These are my kryptonite though, and I may just die eating all these tonight because they're there. 😒

Thank you for making modern dietary challenges so easy to understand. I love Dr Lisle’s examples. I’m living temporarily in the home of my son and his family. I have great plant foods to eat, but this environment contains lots of foods not in my best interest too. I don’t get to control my food environment right now. I wish I had a list of helpful tips for keeping away from these close by pleasure trap foods. I’m deeply concerned that I’ll slip up and gain back the weight I’ve lost and kept off for over two years. It’s a tricky situation.

I might have got the idea wrong but I like the idea that if you eat less dense food you can let your body regulate your weight.
