While fibroids can affect any woman of reproductive age, they are most prevalent in women aged 30-40 and have a higher incidence in African-American women, who are also more likely to experience more severe symptoms and larger fibroids. Although many women with fibroids may not exhibit symptoms, others may experience heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, frequent urination, and pregnancy complications. Dr. Tamara Kolev, a gynecologist and fibroid specialist at Mount Sinai, stresses the importance of understanding the risk factors, symptoms, and available treatments to manage and mitigate the impact of fibroids on women’s health.
