What is a Bi-Directional OBD2 Diagnostic Tool (Scanner) and Why Do You Want One?

Overview of Bi-Directional OBD2 tools and why you might want to add this to your toolbox. More than just reading engine trouble codes and diagnosis. And I will also go through the one I have, the XTOOL D7, and what I like about it and what I don't like as much.

This is not a sponsored video. I bought this tool with my own money and get nothing from XTOOL for this.

I do, however, get a little bit from Amazon with the Affiliate Links below:

Good basic video on a scan tool. I cannot wait to see your more involved automotive videos. As your channel grows you will be able to review more of the latest scan tools (I'm guessing that at a certain subscriber point you will be offered scan tools to review from the manufacturers).

The d8 was out when you bought your D7, but there are upgraded versions of both the D7 and the d8. Lot of these scanners made in China. Share a lot of features and some of them will stop working if they can't call home every 30 days. So if the company ever goes bus, you basically will probably have a brick.

There's only like one or two of them that don't need to call home every 30 days. So if you don't give it internet access every once in awhile it'll stop working. How are other tools like autel will just flat out. Stop working if you stop paying or at least we'll stop working for possibly the car you really need.

Just as a quick reference, I bought a d8 almost 2 years ago but ended up returning it for various reasons. It too was also kind of slow but maybe faster than The D7, but I don't know.

They both have versions now that include Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections and possibly battery and platform upgrades so that way it runs a little faster. Maybe. A lot of these companies are kind of sketchy because they always use new Amazon pages and are always saying it's new new new when it's really old old. Sometimes they just say it's a new product because they updated the software. Anyway, I'm just writing they do have benefits to. I was able to see my TPMS serial numbers with the da easily but when I plug in an Innova 5610 I can't do none of that. The Innova is also bidirectional but it couldn't actuate my seat belt locks or as the d8 could actually test individual components like the seat belt locks that actuate during a car crash. The d8 could also change various settings that might be changeable in the special settings in the car, but some of them may have been not available to end users. You can change the amount of time and seconds. How long your headlights stay on one for how your car reacts to when you turn the car off and some other features. Some of these features I noticed were actually deep buried in some settings in the car but I haven't verified if all of them were there.

I bought the D8 but then returned it because I could not justify paying $500 for it. Works okay but the price is too high for a dated Android 8 scanner. I ended up buying the D7 recently for about $277 on TEMU of all places lol. It has android 12 and pretty much does everything the D8 does for almost half the price. I plan on keeping this one because the price seems fair.

Ok, I was looking last night for my 94 Firebird and I think I need an OBD1 for that car I did not see too much out there and I think I need that because I took all my abs apart and to bleed the system when I got to it I need to fool with the abs system. Plus I took the whole car apart and I know I would get some codes I will need to reset do you have any idea what direction I should go because I think OBD2 will not work I think. Me and technology are far apart lol

I love the Innova 5210. Fix several cars with the aid of this cheap scanner. 5210 does not show real time misfires .It will show a code misfire on a certain cylinder. That is not good enough. I Need fuel trims and the ability to see a small misfire. I have no idea which scanner that does not cause buyers remorse . Must show trims and misfires. 5210 shows fuel trims 5210 has many great options. The ability not to observe misfires is a very weak link. I need that option for sure. I could purchase the 500 plus scan tools. I do not want to spend 500 + dollars doing diy work. I also want a scanner that does not constantly need updates are wireless connectivity

Go with a US make and model scanner if you have older vehicles. These simply do not work for American vehicles older than 2005, with no data profiles in sight. They're not interested in supporting older US cars and trucks.
