Can being weird make you rich and happy?: Daniel Crosby at TEDxBYU

Behavioral finance expert and psychologist Dr. Daniel Crosby tells us why he feels a worldview of principled non-conformity can lead to the two things people search after most earnestly: wealth and happiness. Drawing from examples as diverse as hedge fund managers, baseball managers and tech entrepreneurs, Crosby sets forth his idea that "the world needs your weird." By advocating for a life of rules-based contrarianism, educated risk-taking and learning to find hidden value in self and others, he sets forth a roadmap for how our personal quirks can save us rather than be our undoing. Beginning with an anecdote about a strange clown and ending with a poem from his children's book, "Everyone You Love Will Die," this talk is certain to educate and amuse.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

i would say yes, being weird and different does make you rich. this shows self confidence. the confidence to be yourself and not worry what people think. this is being outside the box. its thinking outside the box. people who usually think outside the box, take risks. taking risks can make you wealthy. being weird makes you likeable in the long run. people overall respect someone who has no fears in being different.

I was bullying by a teacher for being different, but now, I have 2 bachelor degrees and studying medicine in Mexico City and have a possible residency in orthopedics. I'm still weird and loving it.

About a year or two ago I went to TEDxNewEngland and had an incredible range of experiences listening to people discussing their big idea.  Since then I have been to two other TEDx conferences.

What made me laugh about this one was remembering coming back to where I worked at the time enthusiastic about what I had seen, what I had heard, some of the wildly interesting people I had met (one speaker was involved in putting the curiousity rover onto the surface of Mars!).  When I mentioned that I had attended a TEDx conference, I was met with "what's

Perhaps I will be rich and I certainly hope I will be happy, I may have already acheived weird.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I think around the time we begin elementary school, we learn to conform to others in the crowd and suppress the idiosyncrasies we harbor (in some instances we are encouraged to do this). Thanks for reminding me that I have permission to be strange!
