i heard different, in my german class since i was 5, i’ve been told that in germany, there was a baker who mostly made bread, it was a snowy day and he had some dough left over. he was looking outside at all the shivering, cold children and decided to bake them some bread in the shape of their arms to warm them up :)

If you make pretzels just from flour water and salt there is something seriously wrong with you. Apart from the fact that the dough needs yeast to rise you also need to cook the dough in soda just before baking so that it gets that delicious taste!

As a german: There are numerous stories about the invention of the pretzel and its spread:
In 1477, the Urach baker Frieder was sentenced to death for embezzlement. Count Eberhard von Urach promised him a reprieve if he baked a loaf of bread with the sun shining through it three times within three days. Inspired by his wife's devoured arms, Friederer invented the shape of the pretzel. When Frieder's cat accidentally jumped into the tray with the pretzels, the dough fell into a bucket of hot lye. Frieder baked the pretzels anyway and delighted the count so much with his creation that he pardoned him.
